it left tacoma south of seattle, dupont, washington. derailment has left at least the people there on the train but also we are learning about the impact on the ground. interstate five, many injuries. we do not have the number of fatalities at this point but we knew from the get-go there were casualties. at least some injuries, potentially death. we don't have the hard and fast numbers yet. we do have the hard and fast facts on this. that train according to a web site that tracks it and what authorities are looking at right now, had it going at 81.1 miles per hour, just before this happened. it went around the curve you can see. at least one railcar right away when off that overpass and hit interstate five. you can see another dangling behind it and another. this gives us the perspective of what we haven't been able to se see. we hadn't seen those cars that were left into the woods, some of them flipped and again as you pull out wider, we can't control these first live aerial picture pictures. interstate five was left with cars mangled,

amtrak train has derailed in the town of dupont. part of the train, you can see from the pictures, has fallen on to the road below. state officials say all southbound lanes of i-5 are blocked in pierce county. a reporter with our affiliate in seattle says it is the very first day of early service on this particular route. we have crews on the way to the scene. we'll bring more as we get it. this is the picture from the department of transportation in tacoma on i-5. this is at mounts road. you can see the train has not just left the tracks, it's left a bridge. the front of the train, or a portion of the train, is on the ground below, on that bridge. we do not have more information but our crews are on the way to the scene. there has been an amtrak derailment near seattle. this is brand-new news. we are -- i'm reading information and, again, we don't have full information on this, but the route on i-5 was supposed to be brand-new. i'm not even clear on -- >> the very first day for this early service. >> yup. >> unclear to us whether t

lakewood, i want to point out, is immediately north of dupont where this accident happened. that train would've just gone through lakewood after it derailed. two weeks ago, the mayor of lakewood warned that an accident with these high-speed trains was almost inevitable. he called for further upgrades beyond the $800 million the washington department of transport said it spent and this is what the mayor of lakewood said. this is a live picture of the scene in dupont, washington. again, this is a train, this was amtrak train 501, cascades service, which travels from seattle to portland. it had come out of tacoma, a brand-new station in tacoma, which literally opened for friday. it was about 45 minutes out of tacoma. it was rounding a curve just on one side of this overpass you're seeing now, when it suddenly went off the tracks, and as you can see, at least one car landed on southbound interstate 5 upside down. another car right behind it was stopped by the car in front of it, and it is still dangling there, and every subsequent car behind it is off the tracks with the exception of the locomotive at the very back of the train, which is the only thing that still stayed on the tracks, according to the passenger we spoke with earlier. >> reporter: kris van cleave is on the phone and has additional information. kris? >> reporter: it looks like these tracks belong to a freight rail train. that's one of the reasons why gayle asked about positive train control earlie

north west region to seattle, but in dupont today.o, dan. >> unfolding in like he said, that witness, it look like most of the fatalities where the people who were in one of those train cars that ended up on its top as it fell over the side of the trestle at 740 this morning. we had some updated numbers from the state patrol. there was 12 cars and two engines and then train, and 13 pieces. all but one of the 14 pieces left those tracks and many of them jumped over the side of the trestle and onto the southbound lane of interstate 5. killing at least six people and injuring dozens and dozens of others. this was a highly controversial project. this real project cost $181 million to create a new route. a high-speed train from basically tacoma to portland, and it was all intended to shave roughly 10 to 15 minutes off a passenger train trip from the city of seattle down to portland. and frankly, the people in lakewood, the mayor of lakewood, he sued to block this entire project, and it was unsuccessful. just two weeks ago in a public meeti

reporter chris martinez joins us now from dupont, washington. chris, questions now about the speed and whether the engineer might have been traveling too fast. maybe he might have been distracted. what can you tell us? >> reporter: these are all questions that investigators are looking at. in fact, the ntsb told us a little while ago they also determined the train's emergency brake was triggered automatically, not by the engineer and only after the derailment had started. so they are very anxious to speak with that engineer and all of the crew here and they are hoping once they start to talk to them they'll get a better idea as to exactly what went wrong. accidents that cause derailments." the train derailed in the city of dupont about 40 miles south of seattle on an overpass above i-5. as dan springer tells us, there are reports that train was going 81 miles an hour in an area where the speed limit is much lower. >> emergency. >> reporter: the horrific and deadly seen in washington state where an amtrak train making its inaugural run derailed monday morning about 50 miles south of seattle. in a radio transmission call made just after the accident, you can hear the frantic conductor describe the scene. >> we are coming around the corner to take the bridge over i-5. we went on the ground. >> okay. is everybody okay? >> i'm still figuring that out, we have cars everywhere, down onto the highway. >> reporter: 77 passengers and five crewmen were on board at the time of the fatal accident. dozens were injured but officials say they need to search the entire train to figure out the exact number of fatalities.>> there are a couple cars not safe enough to search. we know that there is nobody alive in them at this point, but, there are some other facials, that were probably g

these are the southbound lanes of interstate 5, 50 miles south of seattle in a town called dupont.hey will be looking at speed. this was built as a high-speed route going from seattle down to portland, and there is a long straightaway that parallels the freeway, the southbound lanes of i5. a long straightaway going directly south, directed to the right-hand side of this southbound lane, and then there is a sharp curve, at that sharp curve, that is exactly where you see the trestle, where the trains are over the side of the bridge. it is a sharp curve. obviously, you have to reduce your speed, the max speed is set at 79 miles per hour. there is no way you can be close to 79 miles per hour as you take that sharp curve, in fact, we have heard from reports that the speed was supposed be down to 3t sharp. that's one thing that ntsb will be looking at. the speed at which this train is going. all of the survivors who were on these cars, these train cars have been removed, taken to all local hospitals, and again, latest report at least six people dead. all lanes of southbound interstate 5

especially around dupont circle.onight on more of what came out of that courtroom today. >> reporter: it was a victorious verdict today for the six defendants, the supporters and also in this case the first amendment. but before we go into more detail about what happened inside that courtroom today, i do want to show you video now of just how excited the defendants and their supporters were the minute they walked out of those doors. [cheers and applause] >> reporter: right there, you can hear the excitement and the emotions in their voices. many of them told me they were shaking right before the verdict was read. others couldn't help but cry once the verdict was read. again, the six defendants facing felony charges of destruction of property and misdemeanor charges of engaging in rioting. they wer of those charges. now, they told us how it's almost been a year of not knowing their fate and also questioning their decision making that day. >> i feel like all the hard work and sacrifices that went into getting us to thi

nbc's scott cohn is in dupont with more for us. scott, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, phillip. we do know that more now about the speed thanks to the national transportation safety board which is now on-site. they have been able to download the information from the black box on one of the going 80 miles per hour on a track where the speed limit was 30. but that is -- that just opens up a number of other questions. let's take a look at the scene now as you can see, they have moved some cranes onto interstate 5 to try and get the highway back up and running again. but they still have to see whether there was any structural damage to the overpass where the train came off. and so it's anybody's guess when that's going to be open. there has also been a lot of attention paid to positive train control. that's the technology that allows these trains to be stopped even if they're going into a curve like this at too high a rate of speed. officials confirming that there was no positive train control being used, but that's just one o

federal crash investigators are on the ground in dupont, washington, probing the deadly derailment of the passenger train. three people were killed, 100 injured when all but one of the 14 cars jumped the track. overnight the.n ntsb confirmed speed was a critical factor. >> preliminary indications are that the train was traveling at 80 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour track. >> there are also questions about positive train control. that's the technology that automatically slows down trains when it says it's going too fast. the ceo says it was not yet activated and the owner of the tracks have installed positive train control on that track. >> 501 was making its very first run on a new route between seattle and portland when the train derailed and cars tumbled on to the rush hour car traffic on the interstate below. others were left dangling over the edge. we have more from the scene. >> reporter: on its very first day, on its very first run this amtrak train derailed. nearly every sing is l passenger car came off the track on to interstate 5 below. passengers describe the chaos. s

we'll take you live to dupont, washington, next.avid: national transportation safety board investigators and the fbi are now at the scene of today's deadly amtrak derailment in washington state, that left of course six people dead at least and dozens injured let's go to dan springer whose live at the scene of the crash. what's the latest, dan? >> reporter: yeah, david that number of six fatalities is being reported by associated press and it could certainly change, not only are numerous people up to 70 people injured, but also the authorities here on the scene from the ntsb although they're not here yet but state patrol and the local sheriffs department have not confirmed the number of fatalities but when you look at the scene you have to wonder why more people were not killed. there is one silver lining here that passenger train you see dangling over that tressle over interstate 5 had 77 passengers and five crew members. capacity for that train is 250, so thankfully there were far fewer than capacity on that train but at 7:40 this

a team of ntsb investigators are on their way to dupont, washington. take a look at some of the pictures. you can see from the aerial view. several of the train's cars ended up upside down with the roofs torn off and scattered across the hillside. six passengers on the train have died. the number of fatalities is expected to rise. the pierce county sheriff's office in washington says none of the people driving on the highway died although several motorists were injured in this. the associated press is reporting that an official indicates that the train may have struck something on the track. this was the first time that the train was carrying passengers. it's unlikely that the crash was caused by a maintenance issue on the track. the official cause of the derailment is not known. and the lead investigator is expected to arrive at the crash scene by tonight. >> he's accompanied by ntsb staff with expertise in operations, mechanical, track, signals, human performance, and survival factors. >> on the ground near the crash scene there were several medical
