welcome bill and i introduce a measure called the dietary supplement labeling act along with senator durbin last august. this bill would require dietary supplementary manufacturers to register the product with the fda and disclose the known risks of their ingredients on the productt label. ink think this provides information to consumers regarding dietary supplements and help thepl fda identify potential health concerns. and, as you suggested eight a mr list of celebrity endorsements might be helpful to identify violators and this bill would create a master list of dietary supplements similar to that one. it could cause adverse effects to help consumers understand the risk. what are your thoughts on that legislation? >> is a very wisee place to invest resources some of the dietary supplements raise a great concerns for me. there often not working that way it's a proven way of getting a weight loss you put an amphetamine type drunk at drug it will d work with a weight los but side effects are too great for us to tolerate as a population. >> that method of weight loss may be unhelpful. >> it'

durbin: mr. president, later today the senate will vote on the motion to proceed to legislation known as the laken riley act. the loss of a child is something no parent should have to endure. my thoughts and prayers are with the family of laken riley by every measure an outstanding young woman. we should do everything possible to make sure this type of tragedy never occurs again, but i do have concerns about some of the language in this legislation. let me give you an example. this bill would mandate immigration detention for an undocumented immigrant if they are arrested for shoplifting. even if they're never charged or convicted for that offense. most people pay little attention to law enforcement review television, movies, know the process. you steal a candy bar, hand on the shoulder. the clerk says, wait a minute. what are you doing here. the next thing you know, the policeman is called in and they take you in and charge you for the crime. you make a plea, guilty or not guilty. ultimately it

durbin: for many presidents their legacy is written and sealed by take action in office, their post presidential activities is nothing more than fodder but not for jimmy carter. i remember the last days of the carter presidency. after 444 painful days of sustained, frustrating effort to release hostages held in tehran, we witnessed their release but it was on the day of our peaceful transfer of power from president carter to president reagan. president carter's main goal was to make sure every hostage returned home alive. on that score, he succeeded. leaving office at the age of 46 years -- 56 years of age and passing away last month at 100, he had the longest post presidency in our nation's history and he certainly made it count. the same faith, empathy and desire to help others that motivated him to run for office compelled him to continue to help the world after leaving office. not content with a rocking chair retirement, he devoted himself to human rights, conflict resolution, election monitoring, health care, affordable housing, and so much more. he was a humble man in a world of politics w
