and the third person was dwight eisenhower, who began election day in d.c..helicopter to gettysburg, was the first about in his precinct. was back in washington by 7:30 in the morning. he had a very tense and difficult day. and he said this election as a referendum on his presidency. he didn't love richard nixon. he had significant misgivings about him. he liked kennedy even. less so he thought nixon's victory would be a confirmation of his success. he had a tense night. accidentally his press secretary sent out a congratulatory telegram to can these people fairly early in the night. and so he says oh my god what happened. jim hagerty says it's from the state. it's a mistake. -- eisenhower saw this election as utterly central to his legacy. when nixon did finally concede, eisenhower said this was the biggest repudiation of my life, it's a repudiation of me. so that would be the first act, on election day, 1960. second one would be less than a week later, november 14th, so eight days after the election. kennedy is the apparent victor. nixon, the bitter vanquis
