eamon javers is following the story from washington. n, specifically what did we learn today about the government lev of concern? >> well, sue, what we learned was that these government officials, includi the head of the cia, who spoke today at an event in washington, are extremely concerned about the possibily of hacking into the u.s. election. e concerned enough to be all talking about it publicly at the same time. that's a message you should definite read as their intentiol the sending in public. we didn't learn, though, is exactly what they're going to be able to do about it. the federal governmt itself has been riddled with hacking attacks and has the victim of several major hacks over the past couple of years. and so the question is, what if any support can the u.s. government provide to those states around the country as they gear up for this election in november. one of the officials said today, one of the best things about the u.s. election system is it's fairly distributed. it's run at a state and local level. there's no one ce

eamon javers following the story from our nation's capital. n, is washington creeping closer to a shutdown at the end of the week and what are the sticking points? >> it is creeping closer to a shutdown, tyler. they tried today to get this vote done. they weren't successful. and that's because of this main stickingpoint, the democrats want to see in this spending bill. they want to see money for flint, michigan. you remember the lead water crisis there. they are very unhappy, democrats are, that they haven't been able to get funding to help flint, michigan, in that fight so far this year out of congress. they say this is their last chance to do it. republicans say, hey, wait a second, we'll take that up in a separate bill all together. let's just pass this bill this week to keep the government open. all of that sets us up for a showdown at the end of the week, whether or the get it done by october the 1st. so we'll have to wait and see. it typically, what you get is a lot of brinksmanship in negotiating, horse trading, going on right now. we ex

eamon javers is in d.c. with the latest. hi, eamon. >> reporter: hi, melissa.re of a race tightening nationally. what they suggest about where we're going in november here. starting with the overall national head-to-head picture between donald trump and hillary clinton. this looks like a fairly significant margin for hillary clinton at 48%. trump at 43%. this, according to the new quinnipiac university poll. but when you break this out by the four candidates who may be on the ballot in november, clinton 41, trump 39, then libertarian gary johnson getting 13% of the vote. and green party candidate, jill stein with 4%. it is a much slimmer margin for hillary clinton now with all four candidates on the race than just with the two. clinton 41, trump 39 there. and then look at some of the swing states, starting in ohio. this is a new cnn poll out this afternoon. in the four-way race, trump 46, clinton 41, johnson 8 and stein 2%. so that's a big margin for donald trump in ohio, according to cnn this afternoon. the other all-important state that we know so well from s

let's get to eamon javers in d.c. hey, eamon. >> fbi director james comey is testifying on capitol hill this morning before a house committee. he's underscoring the fbi's concerns here against the hacking threat of the u.s. election this fall. he's saying here ultimately that the fbi is spending a lot of time on trying to figure out who is behind these hacks. here's what he had to say this morning. >> any hacking in connection with this nation's election system is something we take extraordinarily seriously. the whole of government. so it is something the fbi is spending a lot of time on right now, to try to understand. so what are they up to and what does it involve and what's the scope of it. to equip the president, to decide upon the appropriate response. and so that's one of the reasons i have to be very careful about what i say about it. that work is ongoing. >> carl, he didn't say what the president might decide in terms of the ultimate appropriate response to that hacking threat. and comey made a distinction bet

but first, let's get the very latest with eamon javers in washington. >> it was a tale of two donaldrms of tone on immigration yesterday. first, in his trip to mexico city to meet with the president of mexico, donald trump speaking in very measured tones, a little above a whisper, at some point, off of prepared text, as he stood next to the president of mexico. here's what he said yesterday, in mexico city, when he was asked whether he told the mexicans that he would have to pay for the wall that he plans on building between the united states and mexico. >> we did discuss the wall. we didn't discuss payment of the wall. that will be for a later day. this was a very preliminary meeting. i think it was an excellent meeting. and we are, i think we're very well on our way. >> so trump says it wasn't discussed. the president of mexico later said that he did tell donald trump that the mexicans would not be paying for the creation of any wall on the u.s. side of the border there. that was the measured donald trump. and last night in a rally inside the united states and a speech on immigrati

eamon javers has the details. >> hi, melissa. not a good day for leon cooperman or his hedge fund. the s.e.c. said. they said leon g. cooperman had illegal profits by trading in the securities of atlas pipeline on the basis of material, nonpublic information that cooperman misappropriated from a senior apl executive. the allegation here is that cooperman learned of a planned sale of a unit of the company, he increased his stake in the company and profited by about $4 million in what they call illegal paper profits when the stock jumped 31%. not so, say cooperman's lawyers. here's what they said in a statement today. they said, the insider trading allegations against mr. cooperman are entirely baseless. mr. cooperman acted appropriately at all times, and did nothing wrong. we intend to vigorously defend against the charges and will not allow the s.e.c. to tarnish the legacy mr. cooperman has built over the course of a legendary career spanning five decades. all of this will set up a legal battle in the coming weeks here. i should tell you, according to a report from hsbc, cooperman

eamon javers. >> this is is robust data, the household income data from the census bureau.rom 2015, and it is a big annual gain, the send cess bureau p census bureau putting out the data today. it is the biggest annual gain since the census bureau began releasing that data back in 1967. look at some of the interesting subsets of this data, no income rise, though, outside of metropolitan areas. women were up 2.7%. men up 1.5%. and the 2015 rate is still 1.6% below the 2007 level. that gives you a sense that still have some ground to make up, going back to the great recession. the largest increase here was in the bottom fifth of earners, incomes declined for those in the top fifth, noncitizen incomes were up 10.5% to an average of $45,100. and native born incomes up 4.4%. it is very robust data for household income in 2015 and being down here in washington, i look at that through a little bit of a political lens and look at some of the demographic breakouts, particularly the metropolitan region, nonmetropolitan region and start to wonder, does that have some bearing on the po

eamon javers joins us. hey. how are they going to decide what to put off first?they prioritize whatnot to do things on? >> you said a full agenda i thought maybe a full-ish agenda might be the way to describe this. look at the numbers here. start with the number of days left in session here for congress which comes back today in washington, d.c. you see the senate and the house, the senate has 43 days in session. the house just 33 days in session. then you have to divide that into pre and post election. you're down to 43 days. there's just one must-do item here. it's the appropriations bills. they've got to avert a government shutdown by october 1st. that's all pre-election. that means they're going to have to do some of these spending bills and possibly pass a continuing resolution to keep the government open. nobody wants a government shutdown ahead of the election. but you never know with washington. also look at what they could do. okay? couple of things that are at least possible. mylan hearings. you could see a number of committee members have expressed int
