i can tell you, i was able to get around east baltimore, west baltimore, massive crowds in west baltimore. that is just adjacent to the cvs which you saw burned last night. that's the cvs where you saw some of those rioters cutting the hose to at least help put out that fire at that cvs. massive crowds already there, here this afternoon. so far, being in touch with police they haven't reported too much in terms of any kind of rioting thus far. at least what i can tell you what i saw. peaceful protesting happening in the city of baltimore. in fact some people joining in a circle of prayer. here's what we know as far as the city is concerned -- now under a state of emergency. today, schools closed. a couple of federal offices will be closing early today. a mandatory tur few fewer than eight hours a-- curfew fewer than eight hours away. i'm told what we're looking at a helicopter. and you have the governor of maryland here. and i believe i actually saw this helicopter not too long ago here in the beautiful blue skies of baltimore. taking a look touring the damage touring the destruction. the

there in east baltimore, about eight or ten blocks from john hopkins university. that is the cite of that fire there that you see burned incredibly intensely and quickly. there has been a little bit of back and forth confusion about the degree to whether or not that fire was just an accident or related to the riots. the latest we've heard from the spokesperson relating to the mayor coming from a spokesperson from associated press it is indeed related or at least they believe at this hour the fire is related to the riots. a senior center was in the process of being constructed there. the community members, parish members incredibly distraught over the situation there. and at this moment i would like to bring in ben jacob, who is a political reporter for the guardian. and ben, you were there on site talking to the members of the church. what was it like? >> they were heartbroken. that this was an effort where they had built the church the senior center people were in tears. one woman kept saying this is sinful, i can't believe it. the level of how distraught people

we're in east baltimore and every single store in this shopping center was looted on monday night. these are all private business owners just trying to make a living and starting their own businesses and they were victimized. here in this one, they raise up this security fence, security wall. they go inside the store. they break the windows, and i want to show you that surveillance video that we just obtained from this store owner. you can see these people pouring in, one after another. and then it becomes hundreds of them. they turn on the lights. and they do this for a minute and then they take whatever they wanted inside this store and they left. now, we can come back out live i want to show you what this looks like today. four days later take a look around me. i've covered hurricanes. i've covered floods. i've covered fires. this is what it looks like after one of those events. but this this was looting. these people were victimized in their own businesses. now, i want to bring in the owner of this business. she came here with her parents from korea, and they've had this store

. >>> a three alarm fire destroyed a building under construction in east baltimore. the comment center was designed to support young people and family. officials think the fire is connected to the violence that broke out last night. as you saw in jay gray's live report just five or ten minutes ago things are much calmer today. >> it is calmer there and the mission moving forward for the police commissioner governor and the mayor is to keep the peace. they do not want to relive the chaos and the mayhem that erupted last night. right now crews are keeping an eye on hot spots in the neighborhoods where fires destroyed 16 buildings across the city. in addition to the buildings, 144 cars burned. that included police cruisers. the belief in baltimore is that angry protesters started the fire. baltimore went into a state of emergency after the demonstrators started looting and became violent. half a dozen officers are in the hospital this morning. residents calling for calm say the riots are in response to the police involved death that started in ferguson. this is not only

baltimore right now. but there's also the far east side of baltimore. if you walk not far from here not far from where there are, you know a subway sandwich shop, you go a little bit further down, there's a lot of abandoned buildings. a lot of buildings with windows missing, there's a lot of poverty and very visible poverty in this city. and i think that those are some of the things that people really want to see address and want to see them addressed very soon. another thing really quickly, if i can say, ed people were really anticipating getting more information, specifically about what happened to freddie gray. i know that there's now some question and consternation about the fact that police are not going to release that information. i did just get off the phone before we came on the air with reverend ron owens, one of the local pastors here who met with about 15 different clergy who met with the mayor, with stephanie rawlings blake this afternoon at new shiloh baptist church, who was essentially saying the mayor briefed them on the process, saying

see it, but many different cities not only in west baltimore you were talking about but also in east baltimore. a few miles away from where the post people gathered to riot last night and this morning. just because there was great distance where they were rioting it is no less devastating for the people of the southern baptist church that is right next door. this bus in their parking lot will never be used again and the senior center that they are smolderring since they spent 16 million on will never be inhabited by the senior citizens from their congregation. we have seen a combination of good and bad. people did show up to clean up the mess without with a scoop loaderb. neighbors gathered shovels and brooms to clean up the glass and wood. a group of young men not in school because there is no school looted the shoe store and police jeered at police taking them in. it is troubling that that kind of crime happens in broad daylight especially since you consider before the sun came up we have seen national guardsmen in their heavy tactical vehicles patroling the streets. there is a lot more law

i am in east baltimore now. i travelled to west baltimore where the cvs is located. along the way i stopped to talk to people they say this is not what they wanted. they did not wanted pockets of violence erupt. they did not want to see the smoke rising from what's left of this senior citizen community center back here. they're as upset as anybody about what happened in their community last night. they're really hoping it does not happen again. >> another person you spoke to a woman and a mother. i wanted to play this as well. >> it's really displaced anger when you grow up in an area like baltimore city, highly impoverish impoverished more than 100 students receive free lunch. it's anger. instead of killing they decided to loot. that's how they showed frustration with what's going on today. >> the census data from baltimore is so dramatic. two blocks from john hopkins, one of the most endowed campus you have people living on $16,000 a year. >> that's absolutely correct. living on $16,000 a year and would consider themselves lucky because they have jobs. what i heard
