those of you here a couple of weeks ago in the jerusalem lecture, it follows a style that was popular in the middle eastin the early middle ages, using light and dark stone built into the structure. it meant the structure looks like it popped out of the environment like a rock outcropping. that was the whole point. instead of being a neoclassical building shoved onto the environment, it was an organic structure that grew out of the environment. and besides the fact that it separated pedestrians from, i am assuming, carriages overhead, the underpass also was a shelter. if you wanted your kid to play out of the sun. if you wanted to read a book and you did not want to be in the broiling sun, most of them had benches on both sides so it acted as a play area or a reading area. it acted thing it did, as a living frame, a picture frame, for the landscape to come. when you entered the underpass, as you moved through the next landscape and on the other side was a different landscape, the landscape opens up slowly but surely, framed by this. brilliant. who sees this today? when people go through this today, they
