oakland hills fire. exploding eucalyptus trees helped spread the firestorm. today the east bay regional park board approved a settlement plan to start removing thousands of eucalyptus trees from the park system. chief swanson is all for it. >> it's a plan that's going to be instrumental in helping us improve fire protection in the east bay hills. >> reporter: eucalyptus trees grow in all east bay regional parks and some are huge. firefighters say the larger trees will stay while the ones that are smaller, the ones they will be concentrating on will be moved. the plan calls for trees to be selectively removed from parks like point pinole to the north, tilden park and as far south as lake chabot. one group of folks didn't like the plan at first. the hills conservation network. they believe the park district was going too far and wanted fewer eucalyptus cut down. they declined to speak on camera. another group the claremont canyon conservancy wants more eucalyptus cut down. >> we are concerned you're putting us all at increased risk of losing the wild lands in the canyon and o

the street as well. >>> a 3-year-old boy is dead, the innocent victim of a drive- by shooting in east oakland seifkin live at oakland police headquarters and kristy, ind the shooter is still on the loose. >> reporter: that's correct. police don't have any suspects right now. they don't have anybody at police headquarters. they are still looking for who shot 3-year-old carlos fernandez navis. his family was shoving yesterday and a car drove by and fired at two men walking ahead of carlos' family. unconnected to carlos' family. that's when a bullet hit carlos in the neck. now, the boy was rushed to children's hospital in oakland where he later died. the victim's family had just moved to a house in oakland on havens court boulevard and were out shopping together when the boy was shot. >> they are dealing with the pain and suffering of a child, nothing more traumatic of having a baby dying. that's a sad moment. >> reporter: police say the shooting stemmed from an ongoing feud between two parties but wouldn't say if it was gang-related. the two men targeted in the shooting haven't been identified.

it is just part of a string of deadly violence in east oakland. today's shooting happened this afternoon on international boulevard and 103rd avenue. our lilian kim is live in the newsroom with the latest on the story. lilian? >> dan, family members say the six-year-old boy can't stop talking about the shooting. they say he was in the car when his father was shot only a few feet away. jose esparza had just cashed his check and bought a few items at the grocery store when he was approached. according to witnesses, the two men tried to rob esparza, and he resisted. >> i guess he tried to fight back and they shot him. >> it happened on international boulevard and 103rd avenue in oaknd la. family members say esparza's six-year-old son was in the car and saw the whole thing. >> he was crying. he kept on repeating to his mom, why the my dad got shot right there. the guy came and pointed him, pow-pow." >> esparza died at the hospital a short time later. he just turned 39. he leaves behind a wife and two young sons ages six and 10. >> i feel really bad. h

it happened near a pizza shop in east oakland. nbc bay area's cheryl hurd is live at the scene with developing details. what happened? >> well, oakland police are still here at the scene four hours after it happened. as you can see, about two blocks still cordoned off with yellow tape. let's take a look at chopper video taken shortly after the shooting. it happened near 65th avenue and international boulevard near little caesar's pizza restaurant. police say two men were standing near that restaurant when a car traveling westbound toward downtown oakland apparently saw someone. that car made a u-turn and the passenger started shooting. two men shot, suffering nonlife threatening injuries. a 3-year-old boy on his bicycle was hit with a bullet. caught in thecc1: middle of all this, died at the hospital. >> it's hard that a 3-year-old just got killed. it's hard that all of these people are getting killed out here. it's hard that people really don't know what's going on with oakland because there is a every week. all of my friends have
