well, word spread like wildfire across eastern arkansas. within days thousands, one union soldiers he counted as many as 4,000 people in a single day, thousands of people, men, women, children, lined the dusty roads ahead of the union army. they poured into towns where the federals happened to stop for a night. so as the army of the southwest went toward the mississippi river, it was followed by an immense and ever lengthening tail of people of all ages carrying all their possessions and one suspects a little bit of old mass's possessions and accompanied by thousands and thousands of farm animals, sheep and goats. one union officer said i realize what the ark must have looked like it. emancipation came haltingly, slowly in the civil war. it came first on a large scale to northeast arkansas in the summer of 1862. well, on july 12th the army of the southwest finally marched into helena. this brought to a close one of the most remarkable operations of the civil war. during the first six months of '62, the federals marched 700 miles from raleig

much cleaner but almost every election in arkansas particularly eastern arkansas there are examples of fraud and investigation and we never get to the bottom of them. it goes up and down through the courts but we never quite resolve those issues but it is still around. election fraud is still around. now it takes a different form. now there's more voter intimidation efforts made to prevent people from voting and that is a more predominant problem now -- louisiana has the quarter on colorful politicians, his brother, earl, in the 30s. his younger brother in the 40s and 50s and edward edwards who was convicted of various forms of fraud when he was governor of louisiana. all these colorful characters. in arkansas our characters not quite as colorful. at least they don't get the country's attention. some colorful politicians in other states as well. just haven't got -- face >> david welky talks about one of the worst natural disasters in history. 75 years ago the flooding of the ohio river cause 400 deaths, ran over a million people away from their homes and caused half a billion dollars o

that could produce severe weather from eastern arkansas through northern parts of mississippi, alabamannessee. this is going to be a continuing risk. we have a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 9:00 p.m. central time for parts of tennessee and also northern alabama and mississippi. now towards oregon, we're looking at a lot of heavy rain out there and the one good news for the river is we're expecting the river water to continue to recede. so by basically sunday afternoon, we're expecting the river to be to normal levels. it did crest on friday afternoon a little more than 20 feet in height and now it's gradually receding. but we're still going to continue to get pummeled with a lot of rain, through california because we have an area of low pressure offshore pulling in a lot of moisture. areas of heavy rain across parts of washington. right now a bit of a lull across western oregon. more heavy rain coming into areas east of san francisco, sacramento, those areas in yellow where we have moderate to heavier rain. you really need the umbrella and as we got into higher elevation, y

the eastern most were located in arkansas towns of jerome an butler. there's a collection of crafts and artworks created by internees at the rower camp. >> the arts and crafts were sort of how they kept their sanity it gave them something to do. depression was so bad in a lot of the camps in that people -- there was a high incidence of suicide. so people would make these things of beauty to give to each other just as a way to supp we support you and we care about you and here is a little something to cheer you up. i think that they really used the art as a way of expressing hope in a time that sort of seemed hopeless. the camp opened in 1942 in september. the first people arrived then and then over the next several months the bulk of them came. they filled their time working within the camps. but then they also had a good bit of free time, too, that they had to fill. and so a lot of the things that are in the collection that we received are pieces of art that people in the camp did. some of it was done by students as class assignments in school. but a

family plantations down there but he was looking for a place to resettle and he really got into eastern arkansas and found land along the bayou bartholomew fair that he really felt was special, so he purchased that land and built a house and was thriving and brought his wife in their many children to arkansas and were growing up there. in addition to being a plantation owner and a farmer, charlie was an inventor. he invented a new way of making an iron or wedge that was partly hollowed but what do the same amount of footing work but he was always trying to plot. charlie mcdermott thought that man was meant to fly so he tried as hard as he could to invent the airplane. actually filed a patent for a device for traveling through the air. it had 20 -- it was operated like a bicycle. it was human powered get it was effective as a glider. if he got it high enough and got a good when he was able to travel short distances with it and he was determined that if the chicken could fly in the buzzard could flyfly, man too fly and eventually women could fly to the store and pick up their food and fly back hom

everywhere twh in the maroon colors, here's flash flood warnings, through the heart of arkansas and eastern louisiana, we've gotten about six to ten inches of rain in the last 24 hours here. right along the border of louisiana and texas. port arthur, around four, you get the idea here and we've had extreme flooding in a lot of small towns and parishes. temperatures have been off the charts. i can't categorize how significant this early warm period has been, we've never seen it in recorded history from chicago through the great lakes. now some areas here in northern new england haven't seen weather this warm, this early in the spring season. it was 85 in chicago. seven days in a row of record highs. that's unbelievable. each and every day we've broken the record high, detroit, the 82 was the warmest you've ever recorded in the month of march, we're still very warm this morning. we're going to do it again today in chicago, if we get enough sunshine once again you'll be up there in the mid 80s. along the east coast, there are more clouds, we'll keep you in the mid 70s. in northern new england
