and i do want to bring in ed davis, former boston police commissioner. ed, we heard from chief barnes there talking about how they had already done their secondary searches. take us through. but they're not done. obviously, they're still collecting information and evidence. take us through what that looks like at this point in time and why that's so important well, you're dealing with a person who has committed a horrendous act, and you don't know what other things that they were planning or they had in mind for you. >> so you have to meticulously go through that, that area where the person has been to determine whether or not there are any secondary devices, any ammunition has been stored or other guns have been stored in other places. i mean, this is a really intense search process. and then once the area is secured and all the victims have been removed, you really have to secure the crime scene. and that can be a multiple day process. in the marathon case, it was almost seven days of of securing evidence and recovering things. uh, in an internal scene

let's bring in former boston police commissioner ed davis he led the search for the tsarnaev brothersmarathon bombing. so ed great to see you. investigators think that he's left the city. so now where do they look well, alison they'll be concentrating on the places that those bus routes headed out to. >> apparently, he was uptown at the bus terminal within an hour of the shooting. so they'll look at every departure from that terminal into the afternoon and and also be checking cameras to see if there were any more sightings of him to try to narrow down the time when he exited that on a bus. um, but the problem is, there are so many busses leaving there that right now where it is that there's 80 or so police departments outside the city that are being contacted and asked to go through video at arriving city. so it's it's a it's a very complicated exponentially more complicated task than it was the first few hours. >> mm. it sounds like though they have a lot of evidence they have the photos of the suspect. they have. i think fingerprints. they possibly have some dna from a water bottle

let's talk now with former boston police commissioner ed davis, former editor you see this these newictures that we're getting a look at what stands out to you hi brianna. >> well, these are very good photos and much better than what we first saw this morning. um there's a couple of things that stand out. first of all, you've got a young man, white male. you've got a pretty good shot of his eyes and his nose um, the other thing that stands out to me is that is a brand new jacket, in my estimation. and the backpack is a brand new backpack. so this is not a street person or somebody from the environment there. this this tends to push me more towards this theory that this was a hit. it was planned by someone who prepared for it. so there are some very good clues in those close up photos can i draft off that a little bit just to ask kind of what we've been talking about? >> uh, in most of the commercial breaks for the last three hours to that point everything about this in terms of both his proficiency with the weapon, his ability to clear when it jammed. also, i think his entire approac

back with me now, the former boston police commissioner ed davis and former nypd detective david sahni okay, obviously, you know this is at this point, moving very quickly here on this friday night. ed, can i just start with you this gun and we were freeze framing it there. you know, we've heard about it that that there were a couple of jams, right. that might have had to do with the silencer so far. but now this new reporting, a larger sort of rifle used to put down animals on farms. what what sort of what would that actually reveal about this killer that he would have had such a gun here. >> and they certainly have been a number of theories as to why that that gun had to be cocked. so many times. and frankly this is a valid explanation for it. if this is a specialized weapon that's used on a farm, it wouldn't it wouldn't need to be automatically able to fire after each round. it would be something that you could do a single shot with. and it appears as though that's what's happening here. now, that would lead one to believe that there may be some nexus to rural areas of the country,

also here, ed davis, a former boston police commissioner known for overseeing that manhunt after the boston marathon bombing. glad to have both of your expertise. i'll begin with you, john, on this, because you have some new reporting tonight on this incredible investigation. what are you learning? >> they've really been focused on the video canvas. what? they're trying to do is figure out can they, through video pick up where the suspect went after, where the suspect came out of the park and maybe follow the suspect to home or somewhere. that could be the origin and then can they go further back in that timeline and and find his way back? they don't know who they're looking for. they don't know who. the man behind the mask is, but they're trying to reconstruct his movements while they wait for the kind of testing that they'll get from the water bottle and from the phone, which may take some time. >> in fact time is of the essence. right, ed? because the manhunt that you oversaw for the boston marathon bombers that took five days, we are really in the infancy hours from the shooting.

and joining us right now is former us marshal john muffler and former boston police commissioner ed davis. ed, let's start where john and john. john and john just left off talking about the question of personal security, some detail that we got from unitedhealthcare was that unitedhealthcare was aware of threats to top executives. brian thompson was was never named specifically, but a source familiar with the company's security does tell cnn the the leadership team at unitedhealth group is supported by an in-house security team, including at the new york conference. but thompson's security detail was not with him yesterday morning. what does that mean? what does that add into this well, it's very troubling. >> um, the the provision of security personnel is really a risk and compliance question. each, each of these corporations has a compliance and risk department they should be having these conversations. um and if he does have a security function um, he either said i don't need it in new york. it's expensive to have a team travel with you and put them up. uh, so sometimes executives say,

joining us now, we have former fbi profiler gregg mccrary and former boston police commissioner ed davis, and we also have former fbi agent breanna fox. um, gregg, you have the atf saying it's running trace on the weapon that was used in the school shooting. tell us a little bit about that. and also sort of what your expectation may be as we await that. >> yes, the trace will be to run the weapon down because they want to find out where that came from. i mean, in chances are good it came from the home. when we have these juveniles that do the school shooting most often, the gun is in the home and they get they get ahold of it. but we'll, you know, we'll find out eventually exactly where that where that weapon came from. so that's one narrow piece of the investigation that's going on right now. >> and i'm curious to get your reaction to what we just heard from shimon, that officials are still working to conclusively identify the shooter, and they have not yet confirmed whether it's a male or female. does that surprise you that we're now a couple of hours removed from the shooter being dis
