cnn's ed lavandera joins us now with the very latest. ed, what are you hearing tonight? >> john, tonight, friends and neighbors are gathered outside of the crime scene, where five people were shot and killed friday night. and family members, and the people who survived this bloody rampage have described in the last day the frantic 9-1-1 calls they were making, pleading for help. but this area of cleveland, texas is in a remote area of the county, and the sheriff says they got here as fast as they could, but that wasn't enough. >> according to law enforcement investigators, at 11:31 friday night, 9-1-1 received multiple calls about gunshots, someone shooting in a nearby yard. the local sheriff said the suspect had been drinking before the violence on friday began, and that neighbors approached his property to ask him to stop shooting. >> the victims, they came over to the fence and said, hey, do you mind not shooting? we have a young baby that's trying to go to sleep. >> wilson garcia, whose wife and nine-year-old son were shot and killed, said they called 9-1-1 five time

. >> cnn's ed lavandera is in texas with more on how the shooting unfolded. >> reporter: this is the site of the horrific shooting at the outlet mall in allen, texas, where authorities have announced that there are eight victims in all. six of those victims died here at the scene. two of the victims were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. now there are also, we are told, seven other victims that are being treated for wounds that were suffered here in this shooting attack at this outlet mall. three of those patients are in critical condition. so many people still fighting for their lives. it was an extremely chaotic situation as the shooting scene unfolded here just before 4:00 central time on saturday afternoon. we are told by witnesses that there was what they believed to be the gunman, a man dressed in cover. we saw a picture of this covered in tactical gear where ammunition on a body vest as well as an ar-style assault rifle laying on the ground next to him. so that is someone that was witnessed the end of this shooting and what is interesting is is that we were told that

steve, our colleague, ed lavandera, he's there on the scene. i don't know if you heard his report. he described it as a lull. they were waiting to be reunited. what information can people provide if they were at this mall? >> i think if you were a witness of the actual shooting, got a view of the shooter, yeah, they want to talk to you. if you didn't, likely you're not needed right at that second. and people crowding around who don't have firsthand information might not be a huge help. anybody who has cameras, store managers of places that have nearby cameras that might have caught this attack, bringing those forward to the police and to law enforcement would be of extreme value so they don't have to walk into every store and say do you have cameras. where are they? which they'll eventually have to do. there are two faitphases to thi. you have the first phase and the mop-up and the understanding of the motives for this. so right now, it appears that they're kind of at the end of the exigent phase. they need to know whether two people or are we going to use all of our manpower hours

. >> as the chief deputy there speaking, ed lavandera was asking questions. they said there have been several arrests. do we know how many or who could have been arrested here? >> reporter: yeah, those are the details we are still trying to unravel. i think it's going to take some time as investigators, as you just heard from the cheap deputy of the san jacinto county sheriff's department say that they could only really say and confirm that several arrests have been made. so we are continuing to try to unravel this. we do know that the house where this suspect was taken into custody last night does have a connection, according to law enforcement sources, to francisco oropesa's family. exactly who that is and how they have been helping or not helping is the details we don't quite have yet. the chief deputy did say that francisco oropesa had not been at that home the entire time while he was on the run. so clearly there is some movement. the chief deputy also said that he was communicating with a cellphone with various family members. this comes because we do k

cnn's ed lavandera is in texas with how the shooting unfolded. >> this is the scene of the deadly shooting that took place at the outlet mall in allen, texas, suburb north of texas. the area you see behind the lights pointing at us there is where we believe at least six of the victims were killed here in this shooting attack. from what we've been able to piece together speaking with witnesses, that was the area where the shooting attack happened. we're also told and we spoke with a witness who watched the very end of all of this shooting attack when an officer took out the suspected gunman. we saw a woman who shared a picture of that final scene, showed the gunman laying on the ground wearing a tactical vest, an assault style rifle laying on the ground next to him. we are trying to figure out exactly who that gunman is. investigators at a press conference would not take questions as to what has happened. they only confirmed they believe the suspect acted alone and that there were eight victims in all, three of those in critical condition fighting for their lives tonight. ed lavandera, cnn,

let's get to cnn national correspondent ed lavandera. ng the evidence against paxton overwhelming. when does this trial start? >> well, it's going to be the summer of impeachment, right now, what we've heard from state senators is that on june 20th, a committee that will establish the rules for this impeachment trial will present those rules. this hasn't happened for a statewide office holder in texas in more than 100 years. it was back in 1917, that the texas governor was impeached and removed from office. so in the words of the lieutenant governor dan patrick today some of those rules are outdated so that will happen. then there's another resolution that says that the trial must take place before august 28th. look from june to august 28th for this trial to take place. 12 house managers are overseeing the evidence, of course, ken paxton, will have the opportunity to present this case. whether or not he will testify in his own behalf is not known at this point. but ken paxton is not going quietly with all of these allegations swirling aro

let's get an update from ed lavandera, who joins us live. ed, what is next for ken paxton?e side. it's not exactly clear when this trial will take place, but they are preparing for it over there on that side. that's where the math gets a little bit trick wier. you talk about 121 representatives that voted to impeach paxton over the weekend. the math on the senate side is a little trickier and many trying to read the tea leaves on how this might unfold. 31 state senators in the state, 12 are democrats. you need about nine and you need to remember one of those senators is ken paxton's own wife. so all of this adding to the drama that we're seeing unfold here. but there are 20 articles of people in all that stem with charges that have to do with bribery, abuse of office powers, retaliation against whistleblowers, as well as obstructing justice. a lot of lawmakers who voted for these articles of impeachment say it about time ken paxton faces these charges. ken paxton calls it a political sham and an ugly event happening in the texas house. the attorney general is essentially wr

ed lavandera is in el paso with a look at how officials are adjusting to the change. >> reporter: after title 42 ended late thursday night, some migrants discovered they didn't make it in time. this father and son from venezuela were turned away, but he says the goal is to get to the other side to find a way to reach the united states. they will have to wait to figure it out. >> we have been very clear there are lawful, safe and orderly pathways to seek relief in the united states. if one arrives at our southern border when it's going to face tougher consequences. sdplr in the days leading up to last night's deadline, border officials saw a surge of mi migrants. more than 23,000 are in custody, down slightly from earlier this week. but the end of title 42 did not trigger the historic wave of migrants rushing to cross the border friday that was predicted. in el paso, thousands were w waiting to be processed outside a border gate. >> we're doing this as quickly and safely as we possibly can. >> reporter: that number down to a couple hundred, says the city's mayor. >> after yesterday's spi

and now, i want to go to our ed lavandera, who is on the ground, at the scene here. ed, what's the latest? >> reporter: well, as you heard, the major headlines, i think what people are most interested in right now is that this situation, the active shooting part of it, clearly has come to a close, and now, investigators and law enforcement here trying to secure the scene, do all the investigative work that they need to do. as you mentioned, authorities are saying they believe just one gunman was involved in this situation, and now we're trying to figure out just how many wounded and deceased there are in this situation. we've spoken with a witness who said that they saw four bodies on the ground in front of a burger restaurant, and as well as the h&m store, and again, couch this all by saying, these are witnesses who were leaving these premises in very chaotic and terrifying moments, so, you know, these kind of eyewitness accounts can change very dramatically, but from what we've heard from several witnesses, that they saw four bodies on the ground, that could very we

sn's ed lavandera has the latest. >> reporter: while the hunt continues for 38-year-old francisco oropeza man accused of shooting five people in cleveland, texas, the husband and father is detailing how the night unfolded. wilson garcia said he was at home with a group of friends when he asked he and two other men walked over to the neighbor's home, oropeza to shop shooting the weapons so close to the property because the babies were asleep. he said they asked him to shoot the weapons. it was a intense exchange garcia said they called authorities and 911 five times prior to that. ten minutes later, that's when say they co or opeza came back. one of the woman told him to get out of the house as quickly as possible because his wife and son were already dead and they didn't want to lose him because his two other children shouldn't lose both parents. horrific details that wilson garcia is detailing of that night. in the meantime, investigators continue this man hunt. they've been searching for francisco oropeza since friday night where he was able to flee the scene but at this point, investig

cnn's senior national correspondent ed lavandera has the latest from el paso, texas. >> reporter: the public health policy known as title 42 has been lifted. it had been in place since march of 2020, during the trump administration, and it essentially became a de facto immigration policy even though that's never what title 42 was intended to do. but nevertheless it has been kept in place and kept out about 3 million migrants from requesting asylum since that time. so now the question becomes what will the u.s. southern border look like now that this policy has been lifted and what is the future of migration here along the southern border? the u.s. border patrol chief az that he no longer expects this massive rush of people which at some point the biden administration was estimating would be anywhere from 15,000 to 18,000 people per day. the u.s. border patrol chief says they've already started seeing in the days leading up to this point a larger influx of migrants. so he thinks that it is not going to be as dramatic as what had been anticipated. and you know, now for migrants requesti

cnn's ed lavandera joins us from cleveland, texas, outside the suspect's home. any developments? >> reporter: they were very tight lipped yesterday. they had spoken on saturday and sunday and the days immediately after the shooting that took place at this home outside of cleveland, texas, but yesterday they were very quiet. it was sunday afternoon that they offered that $80,000 reward. we did see some movement at the suspect's house, which is just right back over here. there was an fbi agent that was inside the home and also looking through various cars on the property but fbi officials wouldn't explain exactly what was going on. they simply said that they are following all possible leads at this point. we've also noticed that in the area around this neighborhood large poster-sized pictures of this suspect have been put up. i think all of this kind of speaks to the uncertainty of what investigators are dealing with right now. on sunday afternoon fbi officials said that they had no leads, but, you know this, $80,000 reward we know has generated calls of possible

we have our national correspondent ed lavandera joining u.ne, and how did this happen? >> well, the details are staggering and inexplicable, and what we know is the police in a small city of keene, texas, south of fort worth, and according to the police saturday night, matthew davis, the employee at the store sees suspect in this, angel gomez, 20 years old, and he sees that gomez is acting in disorderly conduct, and that leads to a confrontation. and gomez had shown up with a 12-year-old juvenile, and then the altercation turns physical, and at that point, the police in keene says that he returned to the car, and returns with ar-12 assault-style rifle comes and shoots davis and then he was taken by helicopter to the hospital, and pronounced dead. we don't know who the rifle was registered to, but this is a shooting at a time when the families of uvalde families have been pressing for the legal age to purchase an assault-style weapon to go from 18 to 21 and it appears to be going inwhere in the texas legislature, but details of this shooting i

. >> ed lavandera joins us now. you mentioned there were thousands of migrants waiting to be processed outside el paso. today that number dropped down to a hundred. what happened to those people? were they processed? what went on? >> reporter: yeah, they're brought into the u.s., processed by border patrol and then released if they get the proper documentation. they could also be decan ported, it depends on the individual cases. anderson, to give you a sense how things have changed here dramatically this is an alley way behind a migrant shelter in el paso in the days leading up to the end of title 42 was packed with people sleeping outside. you can see how dramatic this has changed. and in speaking to several migrant advocates they believe what's happening on the southern side of the border tens of thousands of migrants are reassessing the border landscape and trying to figure out when the best opportunity might be to cross into the u.s. >> joined now by the mayor of el paso, texas. mayor, appreciate you joining us.

cnn's ed lavandera is live from cleveland, texas. that is just north of houston. and, what are police saying about the suspect, and warning the public up at this hour? >> we haven't gotten any updates as to where the suspect might be. law enforcement officials here in the area who have been handling the case say they've had zero leads as to where francisco oropesa might be at this moment. we don't know if that has changed since yesterday afternoon when they announced an 80,000 dollar reward leading for information leading to his capture, but investigators continue to work. this is the shooting scene you see behind me, sarah. this is where wilson garcia, the man you just heard from, detailed how all of this unfolded on friday night. he said that he and a few others had approached their neighbor, francisco oropesa, asked him to stop shooting. in the meantime, the family said they were calling 9-1-1 five different times, but this area where they are at, just for context, is outside of the city limits by about 15 minutes. so it's a large rural county. it takes time fo

we just heard the comments you made earlier, that reporting from ed lavandera.ow is the situation now in el paso? what are your people seeing on the ground? >> it hasn't changed any from this morning. talking about gate 42, about 1,800 last night, all processed but a couple, 200, 300 processed by early this morning. then i was just down there where ed was talking. i just got back from this. the numbers are way down. monday about 3,000 people there. border patrol with assistance went in, handed out handouts to help them register and get process so they could go into the processing centers and be able to go on to, whether it's shelters, immigration centers, anything like that. the numbers have changed. a week ago, 10 to 12,000 ready to cross. i went into shelters, 20 people in there. and now i went in two days ago to see what to expect. we've been trying to prepare for months now for the unknown. i went over there, i noticed that -- talked to the officials there. 3,000. they told me they have others ready to come across, maybe 5,000. we've been prepared, we've wor
