he also talked about crime and el paso, texas.s what he said. >> city of el paso, texas, used to have extremely high rates of violent crime. now immediately upon its building, with a powerful barrier in place el paso is one of the safest cities in our country. >> what's been the reaction to the president there, cal? >> reporter: well, the reaction is of a very prideful city of el paso, a city that was safe before the wall, craig. we heard in real time right after the speech from the sheriff of el paso county. he said it's sad to hear president trump spread falsehood about el paso. the facts are clear. it's true that el paso is one of the safest cities in the nation. it's never been considered one of the nation's most dangerous cities. he continues that president trump continues to give a false impression of what america is all about. we've travelled this border for the past few months. we've spoken to sheriffs along the border. we spoke to the sheriff of hidalgo county. he said in my county we don't need a wall. we need to coordin

why go to el paso and tell the people of el paso something they know is not true?the report before i came on. the guy sounds like a great reporter, i'm not familiar with him. the questions that were asked must have been odd. the residents of el paso were responding as if the president said el paso stinks, it's crime ridden, it's a no good city. what i've heard the president say it's one of the safest, beautiful cities in america we have today. as i talked to border patrol agents every day, to a man, to a woman, they want the border wall, they want the border fence. as we look at the statistics of those apprehended in el paso, in 2006 it was 122,000 people. in 2008 it was 30,000. 14,000 in 2009. so was there an incredible decrease in the amount of apprehensions there at the border crossing? absolutely stats show it was true. was a violent crime that wats different, i don't know. if you've got 30,000 compared to 122,000 coming over, one could assume crime is going to go down. interestingly, craig, the former mayor cook of el paso in 2013 told abc news the border wall

the person who is running the city of el paso, who is the mayor, who only has the citizens of el paso'sat heart, who is reading facts and giving him facts, but none of that matters because it doesn't fit with his reality. this is -- i want to give the facts, tara. violent crime in el paso peaked in 1993. it fell by 34% between 1993 and 2006. the wall was built two years after that in 2008 and 2009. >> and then crime actually went up 17% the next year. >> so what the hell is going on? >> what's going on is gaslighting, and it's the president who has backed himself into a corner with this b.s. line from the campaign about a border wall and creating this narrative that we were going to build a 30-foot concrete wall to wall everybody out, and you had people chanting for that. he boiled it down into this elementary-style, very, you know, juvenile chant where it's not even practical. border security experts i've spoken to and that i've worked with in the past have said to me, listen, yes, physical barriers work where necessary in conjunction with other things like technology, like more border
