that's really the main concern that we're dealing with here in elizabeth city. they're worried about storm surge about three to five feet above ground. there was a mandatory evacuation issued yesterday for all those residents living in the low-lying areas. we hope that people living by creeks, rivers, took precaution and evacuated yesterday because it would just simply be unsafe to be out riding around in these conditions right now. believe it or not, a lot of people from the outer banks escaped inland here to elizabeth city. hotels are booked throughout the weekend with people who escaped the storm from there. they'll try to ride it out here along with us. >> we have crews spread out across the state. one of the areas hardest hit was the crystal coast. right now, the county manager -- >> we continue to bring you affiliate coverage along the eastern seaboard so you can get a better idea of exactly what people are experiencing in some of these areas, particularly in north carolina, where they're already feeling and still feeling the brunt of hurricane irene. more

you'll be able to see here the eye, south of elizabeth city, our crew right there on nags head, they are really getting the outer eyewall right now, they're getting just pounded by this storm, winds at still 80 miles an hour, and the enormity of the rainfall pattern into virginia and also into parts of maryland will cause flooding, there's already significant flooding into parts of north carolina. the big story of the stay will be that it continues up the coast and probably three hours from now, maybe a little bit less is going to get back into the gulf stream. right now it's over the ocean. the sound still has water in it. although for the most part, i was looking at a couple of tweets from brian stoddard, he's been over there taking a look at the sound, there's no water in it, there's no water in the sound sound, the water has been pushed back up into elizabeth city, but if you're told to evacuate, that means you're in a zone a or a zone b, you need to get out because that's how far the water will come up. the same story in connecticut and long island. the water will come up. you t

just to the north, in new york city, my colleague, elizabeth cohen is in lower manhattan in battery parkcheck in with her. elizabeth? >> jason, here in battery park, i must say i don't know this is true in atlantic city, but i'm amazed at the number of people still here and aren't heeding the mayor's warning to get out. they say they don't think this is going to be such a big deal enth and they will hunker down and put up with it. the mayor said early friday, you've got to get all of your patients out. and when you include nursing homes, it is about 22 facilities. so what they did is they evacuated these people, it was actually done, i watched it happen, it was quite efficient and they brought them to hospitals that were in further out in northern manhattan. i spoke to one woman whose brother is being treated for a brain tumor. he's gravely ill. and she is really very concerned because he was supposed to start a special treatment yesterday and he's not going to be able to because he had to evacuate. let's listen to what she had to say about the incredible anxiety. >> feels like what else

city, you see the statue of liberty. it's getting dark. unprecedented evacuation including at the hospitals. let's bring in our senior medical correspondent elizabethhospitals in lower manhattan, elsewhere, they've basically been evacuated, right? >> reporter: right, wolf, it is called zone a. that is the zone of new york city. we're talking lower manhattan, places like staten island, coney island, where there could be flooding. and so they evacuated those hospitals. wolf they got the e-mail from mayor bloomberg's office yesterday morning and were told by 8:00 friday night, in other words about 12 hours, you need to have your patients out of there. and i must say, i watched the evacuation from from one of them, and it was quite orderly. they were bringing people out in stretchers. they were bringing people out from the intensive care unit. they were bringing premature babies out in those little isolettes and bringing them to other hospitals. as you can imagine, this is difficult for the hospital. also traumatizing for the patients. you know, obviously they're already sick, and now they having to to see another hospital. and we caught up with one wo
