abc's elizabeth hur has more. >> reporter: police surrounding the elementary school on the ground and on the roof. responding to reports of a gunman opening fire at the school's playground. >> move that patient towards the chopper. >> reporter: authorities waste no time evacuating the building and asking parents to pick up nearby. >> it's not every a situation -- >> it's a scarry event. just, you don't think anything like this would ever happen around here. >> reporter: officials revealing the outcome could have been much worse if not for the quick action of the first responders rushing to the scene when the calls for help came in at 1:45 in the afternoon. >> when officers got there, they encountered the firearm that had actually contained the suspect. individual went in, pulled in the parking lot with a vehicle and probably got out of the vehicle firing immediately. >> he wants to remain humble and quiet about it and did nothing that any of the other volunteer firefighters wouldn't have done. >> reporter: now the search for answers with investigators so far confirming the 14-year-old
