nbc's ellison barber is with us from altadena, california. ellison, good morning. >> while we await this news conference, what are you seeing where you are. >> hey, jose. yeah. >> if you just take a walk with me, we're in altadena and you'll see some of all of the destruction. we're near the eden fire. this fire is 33% contained now. palisades fire is still under 15% contained, but over 12,000 structures have been destroyed in these wildfires. most of the ones have been impacted by the eden fire and the palisades fire, the largest by far. this is just one example the family business that is no longer standing. this destruction goes on everywhere you walk, everywhere you look. it seems like there is just nothing left. in a lot of ways, when you walk through these communities, it feels like you are walking through a war zone. if you look across the street, you see what is left of a car, another building area, all of it gone. when those fires swept through here, as we've spoken to people who live in this community, they describe it as just an in

ellison, glad to see that you are safe. thanks for joining us. what are the conditions right now as you are on the ground there? >> hey, katie. yeah. i mean, look, firefighters are still working day and night. we were at the eaton fire last night, watching them deal with a number of hotspots that had popped up in buildings where it looked like the fire was gone, but there were still pockets of heat underneath, layers of collapsed buildings that were reigniting. and they were working diligently late into the evening trying to get all of that under control. look, we're now in the area near the palisades fire, and you can see behind me just the scale of the destruction that you talked about. we're waiting to hear from mayor karen bass, and there are a lot of questions in this community and all of los angeles county about how something like this could happen. we heard from the los angeles county, the los angeles fire departments chief, speaking to our nbc los angeles station, where she said there have been budget cuts and that she has been sounding t

ellison, what's the latest on the active fires and the response? >> yeah. jonathan, we just got down from being along the fire line of the palisades fire just further up back that way you can see a little bit of the haze. but essentially what has happened is up where the palisades fire is, there is this pocket in mandeville canyon where it has sort of reignited, spreading a little bit and threatening homes in that area. we were on the fire line with a team as they were trying to stop flames from reaching homes. at one point, flames coming down the side of the hill to stairs and three firefighters hotshots rushed up towards it, trying to stop that fire before it got to that person's house. i am still covered in a bit of pink. it's flame retardant. air tankers were flying overhead, making massive drops trying to contain this fire. when we spoke the other day with some of the teams who are working on getting that air support, they said this weekend in particular is a crunch time for them, because what they're trying to do is encircle, particularly the palisade

nbc's ellison barber is in altadena for us. what's the situation where you are, ellison. >> hey, chris, let me show you what we're seeing right now, because this explains in some ways why people aren't able to get back into these evacuated areas. so this team right here, they are fighting a hotspot that has popped back up in this building. this is a problem that keeps happening in communities like this one. we're near the eaton fire because when these buildings collapse, some of them have basements, they have stairwells. and when the building the concrete and cement and the layers collapse, it traps pockets of heat underneath it and embers that can reignite. and that's what we mean when we're talking about hotspots. >> and so fire officials and police, they've been saying, look, we know you're frustrated and you want to come home, but this right here is one of the reasons why you can't and why it's still not safe to do that. >> this is a building that when we were here 2 or 3 days ago, the fire was entirely out. two days ago, w

ellison, i understand you are in what once was a vibrant, bustling commercial district. talk about what you're seeing. and also the containment effort, containment efforts that are underway. >> yeah. i mean, this is an area that on a normal weekend would be full of people, but instead it's just empty and rubble everywhere you look. i mean, we just saw three different air support helicopters and also one tanker that appeared to have water headed up towards the direction of really where dana is, where those fires are still very active as they work to try to get them under control. we've heard so much from frustrated residents both here and also where we were yesterday near the eaton fire, frustrated with the response, frustrated with how quickly this fire spread, how big it was, and frustrated by the fact that they can't get back into their communities and their homes to assess the damage, or for those who think their homes are still standing, to get some supplies to go back out. one of the things that we've heard from firefighters that they're dealing with in a lot of the

so, ellison, day six. now battling these fires, how are residents feeling about the ongoing efforts? >> you know, they're incredibly frustrated. and, look, the winds that they keep saying, officials keep saying the winds are picking up. and that's part of why they can't let people back into their homes because it's not safe. we're wearing masks now because we've seen that wind start to pick up. and when it does, it's kicking up debris and rubble that's been left behind. but i mean, look, this is just one example of how much people have lost here. this was someone's home, none of it standing now. i mean, next to it, when you look further down, you see the same thing. the house next to it, totally gone. you can see the water, the beach there. and you understand really quickly why people talk about this neighborhood, this community of the palisades, as being a tiny piece of paradise. it is beautiful, but here a reminder of just how vicious these wildfires were. it's interesting because in a lot of these neigh
