we were expecting an attack in erbil, isil have been very clear that they wanted to attack erbil. in august they sent a message saying that we will send a volley of car bombs and suicide bombers into the city of erbil itself. also on social media, also this isn't confirmed, through isil accounts are claiming responsibility for this attack. however, i stress that isn't confirmed from isil officially but social media accounts that follow isil quite closely. this attack comes as quite a shock because of how secure the surrounding areas are. this isn't a residential area where we've seen bombing in the rest of the country. this is supposed tube high secure area within an already very secure area. >> as you say, the attack occurred just outside the governor's office. what has been his reaction? >> he's been speaking in the last 15 minutes, saying isil fighters are only 1,000 kilometers arm from erbil. they have threatened erbil before, and now he is saying that the kurdish area people are ready to fate, take up the challenge of fighting them, but they are a real threat. >> imran kahn t

charles stratford has the details from erbil. >> reporter: peshmerga sources telling us here in erbil that after coalition air strikes on a village around 15-kilometers from the regional capital here in erbil, it's the closest, there was heavy shelling by isil forces on peshmerga positions in that town. an indication of potentially a push there by isil to come closer to the regional capital here. it comes on the same day as an iraqi delegation from the defense ministry, including the defense minister himself. pledging a friday guide of 2,000 volunteers, 2,000 kurdish volunteers to come and help defend this frontline in the north of iraq. what is important here the defense ministry says the volunteers will come under the eyiraqi army. the per herringer still deciding whether to accept the oftener. in the winter months we hear there could be greater difficult any defending that frontline. the iraqi army also pledging heavy weapons, more weapons for kurdish forces here. kurdish forces saying that they have received weapons from some of the coalition forces, but, again, asking for more. s

and erbil just a few weeks ago. the fact is we're already there. we've had to be there. the government in baghdad is still quite delusional, if you will, about what the real impact is. they're still talking about long-term training before they're ready to fight, so the fact is that if we're to protect the gains we made against islamic extremism, my marines from camp pendleton and others are going to have to go back again. >> they're going to go back. should they be in combat position? >> iraqis should fight for their country. there's no question at all. they've been trained and they should do it. the fact is the kurds are willing to do it. i have no doubt whatsoever that the kurds will fight and all they need is our air support and our technical know-how and they will do it. when it comes to the sunni/shia divide that the maliki government created, it makes it very, very hard to put together the kind of military units that they should have. that remains to be seen of whether or not the substantial portion of that 80

a good part south of erbil were very much against this or very worried about it. what happened after june 10th is, in fact, has the kurdistan region gained more leverage? has this worked to the kurdistan region, and are they -- is it well on its way to becoming more independent? and my answer would be clearly no. now, what has happened to the kurds' benefit, as i said, more territory, kirkuk, they're swearing they will never give it back to the baghdad government. and there's been obviously a nationalist surge that the kurdish peshmerga are finally back in erbil -- sorry, kirkuk and there's a transborder transnational surge by kobani and syria and the international partnerships that the kurds have established as part of the coalition against isis, military weapons, light weapons, and a coalition support. this has been to the kurds recognition internationally. but the bad news is when you take 1,000 kilometers of border, do you have to defend it. my concern would be in the future that, again, i go back to if the iraqi government and security forces aren't going to
