eric, talk to me about the discourse. why is it that in this country people are still afraid to stand up for someone who is a proud champion of women's rights? >> i don't think they are. i think this is care coming down hard on brand ice. let's talk about this for a second. this is what this is all about. in 2007 -- that's important -- she said islam neededs to be defeated into something peaceful. we're at war with islam, 2007. brandeis recently offered her this honorary degree but retracted it with pressure from care and said, this is really important, we respect and appreciate her work to defend and protect the rights of women and girls throughout the world. that said, we cannot overlook some of her past statements inconsistent with brandeis university's core values. we regret we were not aware of those earlier statements? really? we're not talking about 20 or 30 years ago when she was in college. we're talking about less it than seven years ago she made the comments. they clearly are backtracking, caved under the press

eric? >> you know, jennifer, the military has not been strongly behind psychiatric evaluations and other things for several years. they were saying -- as a matter of fact, they fought the issue of post-traumatic stress disorder for a long time, if you remember. now all of a sudden we've got several cases of this. we don't know whether it's post-traumatic stress disorder, but we know we have a lot of people with mental problems in the military and the yet their budget for it, leaving aside whether workers have to identify their patient, they still have too many people with too many problems and not enough resources to deal with them. >> reporter: well, other eats thing, bob. actually back in around the 2009 time frame the military and the army in particular really made an about face in terms of post-traumatic stress and mental illness and trying to destigmatize that. they put a lot of efforts into that, and what you're seeing is almost at times an overcompensation for that, so i would argue

joining me now to discuss all this is eric boehlert and former rnc chairman, michael steele, an msnbc contributor. welcome to you both. eric, your view on this and whether there is some slight shifting in the politics, as i mentioned. >> it's funny, now expansion becomes repeal. they're boxed in. on the one hand they're voting to expand but they put out a press statement saying this is part of an effort to repeal. the larger question and for the conservative movement and the conservative media is, as you said, they went all in. last week we had this sort of freakout over enrollment. now we'll have a freakout over uninsured. they'll have to unskew this gallup poll because this goes against everything that they said. as you said for three and a half years this was a theoretical debate. they could make all kinds of scary predictions, you know, death panels, it's going to kill the economy, we're going to lose jobs, et cetera, et cetera. but as these data points come in, it becomes increasingly difficult for the republican party and the conservative media to deal with reality. >> let me go
