i'm eric thomas, moderating today's special roundtable show. more than 1,000 african-american students were recently honored by san francisco unified school district for having great grades. it was a part of this year's black history month celebrations. abc7 news reporter lyanne melendez introduced us to some of these students. >> raven alyas is among 1,400 african-american students making the honor roll at one of the many public schools in san francisco. today, she will be acknowledged by the san francisco alliance of black school educators. >> i think it's important for us to acknowledge the people who are doing well, because then it encourages kids who aren't. >> students must have a 3.0 grade point average or higher to be recognized. maintaining that gpa helps students compete with others who are on track for college. >> it's very important that our students are exposed to and receive the messaging that you can do this and you can compete just like everyone else. >> linda jordan is the african-american post-secondary pathway manager, helpin

>> news anchor eric thomas is live with more on the story. eric? >> reporter: and dan, the 24-year-old female victim was described to me off camera as a loving mother of two. and her children need her. the man was described by one of his relatives, not so much described, as i was told they don't know what happened there, they still have major questions. here's what we do know. there was some sort of altercation in the water this morning and both people are dead. oakland police say at about 4:30 this morning, a witness called 911 to report strange activity in the water. oakland firefighters were first on the scene. >> he heard two people in the water, one of them being a woman, arguing and kind of thrashing in the water, opd sent an officer in, they went in and they were able to retrieve the gentleman from the water. >> the man was identified as 39-year-old michael grace of oakland. police pulled him from the water and paramedics took him to the hospital. >> but they couldn't find grace ariana. >> we know that the patient had been under the water fo

i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm dion lim. right away let's get to abc 7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian, who is live for us in north beach where that fire broke out. still very active behind you there. >> eric and dion, the fire is finally contained. it took a lot to put this fire out, which started just after 7:30 tonight. take a look. you can see firefighters are still here on the scene. one person has been displaced. that's a business owner. and everyone in that white building with the blue ladder attached to it, they have all been evacuated due to water damage. this was a massive fire which engulfed the building which stands at the corner of powell and columbus. the top floors are vacant apartments. while there are five businesses on the bottom floor. firefighters first took an offensive mode and attacked this fire from the inside. but soon had to pull out and fight the fire from above and from the street. >> there was fire on the ground floor. i came through the stairs underneath the guys on the second floor. their inci

i'm eric thomas. >> i'm deon lim. law enforcement is looking for someone who shot two people. >> they were eastbound 80 her clees on willow avenue where the gunman opened fire. lillian kim is live with the developing details. lillian? >> reporter: eric and deon, the chp is hoping for tips from the public. the shooting happened 9:00 p.m. interstate 80 between hercules and rodeo. investigators believe the shooting was a result of road rage. two people were shot, a woman in a passenger seat suffered moderate injuries and a young girld believed to be 5 to 6-year-old suffered major injuries. there are few details beyond that, not even a description of the vehicle, from where the gunshots were believed to have come from, which is why the chp is asking members of the public to call them if they witnessed the incident or saw or heard anything unusual on interstate 80 last night. >> if they saw something at that time where they could have heard it or actually seen the incident as it actually occurred gunshots going off, seen i

hello, i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm dion lim.begin with a developing news of the tragic shooting at the veterans home in yountville. now, today, we learned one of the three victims, jennifer gonzales was nearly 7 months pregnant. jennifer golick leaves behind a husband and 7-year-old daughter and christine loeber dedicated her live to helping veterans heal. >> they all died yesterday after albert wong turned the-- at the veterans home. the victims' bodies were found nearly nine hours after wong entered the treatment center with a gun. we're told wong was kicked out of their program two weeks earlier. >> we do have live team coverage right now from napa county. we begin with abc7 news reporter cornell bernard live in napa for us with new information about the victims. cornell? >> reporter: dion and eric, we are on the street where christine loeber lived. she lost her life at the veterans home yesterday, of course. friends and relatives say all three victims dedicated their lives to helping vets.
