erica, does all of this seem familiar to you?the whole area of family dysfunction and substance and mental health issues? very much so. i, myself, am in recovery and i am the parent to six children and my family-i became-using alcohol, and that roller-coastered into other substances, and it was very hard to keep the family dynamic together. how early in your age? i started using alcohol originally when i was 14 years old, but kind of took a break from that during my pregnancies, and i picked up again at age 25 and started drinking on a daily basis. and that turned into cocaine use and other substances from there. but what really ended up happening was my children paid the price for that. i wasn't able to be present for them and do the things that i needed to do. and i think what was most difficult about it was because of the stigma around being a mother and having an addiction and a family that i wasn't able to seek treatment when i needed to. when it came time that child protective services became involved in my life, i didn't h

. >> thank you erica.ws this morning are working on cleaning up the mangled metal outlet behind after a crane involved in work on the new bay bridge collapsed. this is video from a helicopter partnership with abc seven news. you can see workers working to tear down the crane. the crane was on a barge underneath the new span when it fell around noon yesterday. it was helping to remove the temporary support structure and was holding a piece of the structure at the time. >> the piece of work that was involved in taking to the bay bridge construction campus. the two cranes that are out there now were part of the process are being secured and the investigation will take its natural course to find out what happened. >> at this point it does not appear as though the new span was damaged on the crane collapsed. but construction officials will want to confirm that as a part of their investigation. the new bridge is still expected to open over the labor day weekend. >> today marks the 36th consecutive day gas prices

and erica, let me ask you a question. if i know of a family member-i am not in the immediate family but if i know of a family member that has a problem, how should i approach getting or seeking help for that individual? i think that the best way to go about it is to really educate yourself first and to gather information about the resources in your community to help that family member. but then to approach that family member face to face on a, you know, mutual level and tell them that you think they might be having a problem and to not go at them with judgment or to look down on them but to just really say, "you know, i think that you're having a hard time right now and i've come up with these resources to help you and why don't we do this together." very good. nancy, final thoughts? i think part of what erica said with reaching out to that family member is so important for each of us to seek the formal system when needed but to act with compassion. it could be any one of us and to act with compassion when it's not your i
