erik: maybe not.hen you go around the globe, our vantage point of clients all around the world -- and we work with clients working with enormous sovereign wealth funds down to retail investors. so we are seeing the spectrum. there is not a uniform perspective on what can i expect, what should i expect. in general, you are seeing investors take return expectations coming down. the challenge is, where are they moving, where are they going to? this has been the big driver of why private equity capital is rising. they are making the conscious decision to move out of lifted -- listed equities, to move out of listed credits, and moving to the private markets. they are doing that because, on a short-term basis, for years, long-term basis, 15 years, the private market has been a better place to be on a net-net-net basis. lisa: what will be the fastest-growing asset class? erik: credit. we are going to shift from nonperforming credit to performing credit. i think private credits are going to grow enormously. w

erik: you sound cautious >> -- you sound cautious. cautious, particularly when you take a longer term view. and the last decade, the s&p has returned 13% compounded annually. a balanced portfolio has returned about 8%. that would put it at the fifth best decade since 1880. so we've had a really good 10 years. you have to kind of fit forward and say, what is a reasonable expectation for the next decade? erik: forecasters have been warning for a while already that returns are going to be lower, but they haven't been. what is it going to take for the prudent investor to be rewarded? david: that is absolutely true. if you take year on your returns, people have been expecting growth to be lower. people have been worried about trade, etc., and yet the stock market has continued to come in. erik: and the high-yield market, investment-grade market. david: but if you take the next decade view, here's the headwinds you are looking at. first of all, you have lower growth that is coming in not just in the developed world, but also in the developi

erik: because everywhere you turn, you are being encouraged to take more?don't need to take more. i have enough. but i just have always believed usually withns end tight monetary policy or credit problems, and i think what we are doing is definitely borrowing from the future, and we will probably end badly as did, but thatd could be years. i'm 66. i might be dead by the time that happens. so in the intermediate term, technicals are pretty good. the economy is fine. if anything, our biggest problem going in once the fed has andted away from their qt tightening program, our biggest problem was global trade. i'm not saying everything is all peaches and roses now, but certainly on a rate of change basis, i don't see that being -- if anything, there is a de-escalation, not an escalation there. for now, all systems go. erik: how are you expressing that in your portfolio? stanley: well, i'm long equities. i'm long some commodities. i'm short fixed income. and i'm long commodity currencies, short the yen. of, for now, betting on a benign economic outlook and a beni

erik: can these measures stave off a recession? afford to borrow more given it is caring the world's heaviest debt load? kathy: very good questions. think the answer to the first one is we think it will definitely help reduce that probability of japan entering a recession. if the globe enters a recession, may be the spending will not be sufficient. the way we are painting the world economy from goldman sachs's perspective for next year is it looks like more of the same, in fact, a little bit of acceleration of growth for next year. some of the trade-related exports are going to be somewhat mitigated. we have fiscal -- fiscal stimulus in the developed world and we have monetary policy that will stay very lax and easy. assuming the fiscal stimulus comes in a timely fashion, assuming the boj stays put with zero interest rates, we think this will be enough to stave off recession. in terms of can they afford it? of course it will balloon the already large fiscal deficit that japan faces. frankly, better to do it when rates are zero than

erik: where do you see evidence of warped calculations?, the for pension fund that need the return of 7.5% and can't use cash, money markets, high-grades, or even get what it thinks it needs from stocks and bonds, pushes out to alternative investments. private debt, private equity, venture capital, things like that. erik: it's been great for oaktree in brookfield. howard: and for our peers, that's right. my colleagues and i left the firm where we were managing $7 billion, and our hope was we would get back to $7 billion. and as you said, now we are at $120 billion. that gives you an idea of when wordarted oaktree, the alternative investment didn't exist. now it is extremely important. so that is an area of access. capital has flowed to the alternative markets. you've heard me before describe the people doing as handcuffed volunteers. they are doing something because they think they have to. erik: do you worry, because of the fact that we have negative interest rates, for example, because we had and still have quantitative easing, that the
