joining me right now from the white house, cnn's erin mcpike. so, erin, how effective do we understand these air strikes to have been? >> reporter: fred, our reporting so far on the ground there, and from the pentagon, shows that these air strikes over syria have not made much of a difference yet. now, we know that three arab nations joined with the united states in these air strikes and they exited the area safely. but from what we have learned, these strikes have destroyed some buildings and some vehicles that isis uses, but they've only done some damage to some airfields as well as the command post. now, arwa damon, cnn's arwa damon is there and she is reporting that they have not done much to break the siege over kobani. now, this is something that the defense department has been mulling for some time. however, defense secretary chuck hagel was just asked about this yesterday, and he urged patience, which you'll listen to those comments. >> we continue our operations from the air. i also want to emphasize that no one is under any allusions, u

let's go straight to the cnn white house correspondent erin mcpike. so, erin, what more is the white house saying about this? >> reporter: well, fredricka, president obama made this decision on the plane ride back to the united states from the uk last night. however, i want to play for you something he said in the rose garden on june 30th vowing to take this action on immigration reform. listen -- >> if congress will not do their job at least we can do ours. i expect the recommendations before the end of the summer. and i intend to adopt those recommendations without further delay. >> reporter: now, president obama's team did insist that he will make some sort of action by the end of the year, but they are not going to do anything before the midterm elections because their fear is that it could ignite the right wing of the republican party make this a big issue and then democrats could, in fact, lose the senate as they're in danger of doing now. however, what we have heard from white house officials is that if democrats hang on to the senate, the calcu

christine. >> erin mcpike, thanks. the u.s. is ramping up air strikes in iraq trying to stop isis extremists from taking over a dam on the euphrates river. if it falls to the extremists, it could fall baghdad. i want to bring in our reporter jamana from baghdad. this is another critical piece of infrastructure. >> reporter: christine, the isis militants in the province have been trying to capture the haditha dam. much of the province has been under control of the isis cities like fallujah for months now. since january. but, haditha and the dam have been under control of the iraqi security fources and tribes in the region. this is not stopping extremists from trying to capture it. the concern is the continuous attacks that have been launched genera on the dam. for andbar province. on sunday morning, they launched the ground offensive with the backing of the u.s. air strike. they say they have managed to make progress taking out isis positions. the focus of the operation and offensive has been a district called barwanah. six mile

. >> erin mcpike joining me live from the white house. tell us more about what should be expected this week. how much detail will the president likely reveal? >> there are a couple of big questions that still loom very large over this speech. the first one is will president obama seek congressional authorization on whatever it is that he plans to do? at this point he's said that he wants lawmakers involved. he wants their input. he wants their support but that could simply mean that he wants lawmakers to be basically ambassadors of his message and not necessarily put it to a vote and of course some members of congress may not want to be on the record for a vote on this. just a couple months before the midterm elections. i want you to listen to that part of the interview where he talks about that. >> what i'm going to be asking the american people to understand is number one, this is a serious threat. number two, we had the capacity to deal with it. here's how we're going to deal with it. i am going to be asking congress to make sure that

christine. >> erin mcpike for us. the u.s. stepping up air strikes in iraq trying to stop isis from seizing a strategic dam on the euphrates river. if the haditha dam falls to terrorists it could bring down the flood gates. i want to bring in jomana ka rrk a radesh this morning with more. how are they doing? >> reporter: christine, haditha dam is in anbar province. the province mostly controlled by isis. that is where we saw the early advances back in january where they took over major parts of anbar and fallujah. the haditha and haditha dam have been under control of the iraqi security forces. isis has been trying over the last few weeks and months to capture that key installation. the haditha dam. officials told us they have been concerned in the attempts to capture the dam. isis has launched attacks and they are concerned of mortars and attacks to damage the dam and cause what they call catastrophic flooding in anbar province and other parts of the country. that is why iraqi officials requested the assistance of the u.s. mi

let's go to erin mcpike at the white house. erin, what's the reaction you're hearing outside of boehner and certainly some mr. detail on how he reacted very quickly to this? >> reporter: well, poppy, we're also hearing from a number of groups who support immigration reform, and i want to show you some of the language that they are using. it's the service employees international union, america's voice and fair immigration reform movement and they're using words like we're deeply disheartened, we're fairly disappointed, it was a breathtakingly harsh movement by the president. and they said we advocates didn't made the reform promise, we just made the mistake of believing it, poppy. essentially a lot of latinos feel abandoned by president obama. >> when you talk about the politics of all of this, you had white house officials coming out and saying it's too big of an issue to allow it to be used as a tool to get votes. you are talking about the key contest states in terms of november elections for certain democratic senators who cl

cnn's aaron mcpike joins us, and cnn's anna coren joins us from erbil. erin, let me start with you.about the coalition nations that are ready to help the u.s. in this fight against isis? who are they? >> well, martin, that's a very interesting question, because actually what president obama said yesterday was he didn't get any pushback from nato members, u.s. allies, on the need to fight isis, but he didn't get any more specifics on how involved those countries are willing to get militarily. now, he did say that his strategy is becoming clearer essentially. he compared the fight against isis to the fight against al qaeda, that they're going to have to dismantle the leadership of the network, take down its financial capabilities, and that's what they're going to do. but he's focused really on air strikes. he has not laid out anything other than to degrade the capabilities that isis has. >> anna, you've been on the front lines and have seen a lot of this and what's going on, the battle on the ground. what's happening there right now? >> reporter: yesterday, we were given exclusive acc

erin mcpike for us, thank you for your report.nnah graham case with cnn law enforcement analyst tom fuentes, former fbi assistant director. also joining us is journalist cory barefoot. you wrote a very detailed report, a great report focusing on jesse matthew, or l.j. as he is own. you interviewed his acquaintances before he was seen with hannah graham. explain what they said to you about his behavior, because he had a run-in with a man and also appeared to be harassing some women, right? >> that's right. made an effort to talk to a number of people who were eyewitnesss that night to the events that took place in the couple of hours leading up to her disappearance. i spoke with people who were partying with mr. matthew that night. i spoke with people who were in tempo, and they described his behavior as disturbing, erratic, aggressive. he was constantly tracking these women around the bar, touching their hair, touching their back, touching their legs. and one of the young women with whom i spoke told me that she had to tell him, k

i'm erin mcpike.is still on edge since an unarmed black teenager was shot and killed last month by a white officer, and now the shootings of two officers overnight stirred up emotions once again. one officer was shot in the arm while on patrol. authorities say there's no reason to believe that shooting was connected with protests over michael brown's killing. the suspect is still at large and in a separate incident three hours later, police say someone opened fire on an off-duty officer who was in his personal car on an interstate. the officer did not appear to get hit by the gunfire. >>> in hong kong, more than two dozen people are injured following a violent standoff between police and tens of thousands of protesters. pro-democracy students are demanding the resignation of several chinese politicians. police responded with tear gas and batons before backing off. the clashes follow a week of boycotts and protests against what students see as growing interference in hong kong politics by mainland chin

that's the big question cnn's erin mcpike is at the white house.cutive action can only go so far but legislation because universal law of the land and usually has more teeth. what is the reaction from lawmakers on the president's decision? >> reporter: to some extent republicans are viewing it as an opportunity because they can portray the president as playing politics on the issue. of course there's more resentment on the left particularly with pro-immigration reform groups and illinois congressman luis gutierrez, a democrat leading the charge on immigration reform in the house was on abc this morning and here's how he put it. >> it's clear that playing it safe is what is going on at the white house and among democratic circles and playing it safe means walking away from our values and our principles. >> reporter: what he means by safe is that in a number of states where the most competitive senate races are this midterm election cycle, there are smaller populations of latino voters so movement on immigration reform wouldn't necessarily help the d

erin mcpike is live in the white house and tom fuentes is in our washington bureau. what do we know about the two incidents and the two suspects in custody? >> reporter: it is the 42-year-old man from texas. he was on active duty in the army from 1997 to 2012 and he served in iraq from 2006 to 2008. there, as you mentioned, he was carrying a 3 1/2 inch knife with him into the white house. we also know there was supposed to be a canine stop of this man after he jumped the fence that obviously didn't happen and he was able to get into the white house. at this point secret service said they are in creasing the patrols outfront of the white house as well as the surveillance. >> will they reveal anything more about the security measures. you said increased patrols but what more? >> that means more secret service officers outside, more surveillance. not a lot of detail. of course this is the secret service so it is quite secretive, but they are revi reviewing the protocols. >> thank you very much erin. we'll check in with you later. so how does the most secure home in the
