a key west resident from 1948 ernest hemingway used these city as inspiration for most of his works. together with our cable partners, cities tour staff recently visited many locations exploring key west's richard street. learn more all weekend here on the american history tv. mr. chandra: welcome to four zachary taylor state art. it goes back to 1845. it continued to be constructed until 1866. they were able -- they were able to fashion us with the remnants of the masonry fortes. they found it was all the way down here to 1845. it was one of the largest masonry fortes of its size. it was state of the art. this was the best thing we had to offer after some of these disasters that occurred in the war of 1812. at one time we were a true fortress surrounded by water. there is no beach, there was no parking lot. all we have is a moat. there is a moat that the park service put in, just to have a sense of what it was like when it was surrounded by water. this was january 16, 10 days after florida became the third state to leave the union. this fort was officially taken over by the union. c
