[ laughter ] >> we still have a lot more ahead including a safety alert about beach umbrellas. how to stay safe this summer. that's all coming up. >>> now we're going to turn to the deadly bear attack. a black bear pouncing on a man in an unprovoked attack on his property in arizona. matt gutman has more on these encounters. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, michael. want to give you a sense of how incredibly rare this was. this was the first fatal black bear encounter in arizona since the 1980s. that helps explain why investigators are scrambling to understand what caused this predator behavior seemingly out of the blue. >> reporting that a neighbor was being attacked by a bear. >> reporter: an extremely rare black bear attack that left a man dead continues to mist mystify authorities in arizona this morning. according to officials 66-year-old steven jackson had been sitting enjoying his coffee at a table on his property when a male back bear began to maul him. >> a bear to attack somebody in the morning like that, daylight. it was day light. >> reporter: jackson was heard screaming as the bear dragged him 75 yards down an embank embankment. multiple neighbors desperately trying to help. >> they tried to get the bear to stop attacking him. there was honking horns, different things they were doing. >> reporter: the attack only ending when a neighbor was able to shoot the bear. the bear was killed but it was too late for jackson. he was pronounced dead at the scene. authorities hope post mortem might explain what they are calling extremely aggressive behavior. >> black bears are primarily, they're omnivores. they'll occasionally pick a small mammal. to go after a human, i'm curious to see what the necropsy shows. >> reporter: while attacks like this are rare the explosion of black bears is on the rise. in recent weeks there have been close encounters everywhere from the ocean in florida to this bear hanging out in a tree in d.c. and this one roaming around a tampa airport. black bears are much smaller than brown bears. while a fully grown brown bear can weigh up to 1,000 pound, arizona black bears weigh about 350. if you encounter a black bear, make yourself look as large as possible. >> if you see a black bear, raise your hands really high, speak firmly. hey, bear! hey, bear! and just slowly start backing up. worst thing you can do is turn your back to a bear and run. >> reporter: with the population of black bears on the rise, these types of encounters are increasingly likely. >> they like going into trash can, eating pet food people leave in their yards. these encounters will probably become more and more frequent. we just need to learn to live with these animals. >> reporter: to rehash what to do if you are being mauled by a bear. experts say if a black bear, fight like hell, go for the snout and the eyes. if it's a brown bear, there's not a lot you can do. you've got to just try to curl up and protect your vitals. the case of that black bear in arizona, mild wife officials hope the necropsy will help term if this bear was rabied, injured or just starving for food. guys? i got bud lights for us. >> reporter: conservative calls for a boycott of the beer coming soon after. celebrities like kid rock attacking the brand, demolishing a table of bud light. at the time anheuser-busch issuing a statement saying it never intended to be part of a discussion that divides people. we are in the business of bringing people together over a beer. garth brooks responding to the backlash announcing no beer would be off limits at his new nashville bar adding, if you come into this house, love one another. but some bars supporting the lgbtq community felt betrayed and joined the boycott. >> there were supporters of lgbt rights who were disappointed that the company didn't come out and sort of reiterate its support for those groups. there were many folks who were upset that the company didn't distance itself more from this instagram post. in the end pretty much everyone was mad at bud light. >> reporter: late last week the company issuing a new statement promising valued customers we hear you and summer advertising that reinforces what you've always loved about our brand. that it's easy to drink and easy to enjoy. now while modelo won the month of may, for the year bud light continues to be the top selling brand in the u.s. and its parent company anheuser-busch, which all owns michelob, continues to be the leader. it is a challenging time for beer, as also many are making the switch to hard seltzers. guys? [ laughter ] >> george. that's a classic from seinfeld. jason alexander will be here tomorrow with eric mccormack. they are working together on "the cottage." they are going to tell us all about it. you got a dynamic duo there. >> sarah jessica parker and author elysha chang. her new book quitters paradise. you see it right there. it is the first book published by sarah's book company. what was it about this story? >> oh, everything. unique, original voice. a story about grief that is able to be surprising and funny and a family, an intergenerational family story. a voice that was fresh. sort of protagonist that is with holding and pulls the reader in. i think any time you come across a new exceptional writer, you want to be involved in shepherding that story, that author, into the world of readers like me. >> it must be great. what was it like to get that phone call? >> oh my gosh. i was absolutely floored. it's something that i had been working on for six, seven years, alone and in a community of writers, of course. but to finally have it be read and to hear it read with such enthusiasm by sj and my editor. it was just, i knew the book would be in really good hands. >> you toiled on it for so long, six to seven years. where did you find that inspiration? >> oh, man. you know, i think inspiration changes over the course of time. you have to stay interested in the project and move from different motivation to different motivation. but initially, i think i just had a lot of questions about the world. i couldn't find answers. how to have a career, how to have a love life, how to start a family. just how to live as a person. >> what do you want people to take away from this book? who is it for? >> i want people to take away whatever they're coming to and looking for. i think something that's really important to the book is definitely the idea that we are -- there's parts of us that are unknowable to ourselves, to our closest loved ones. that can be a comforting thing. >> it must be so gratifying to usher new voices into the world. >> it is. it's exciting especially when the voice is not one that you've seen produced on a page. the story feels very personal. this is a family story, many family stories. elysha has found a way to illustrate and describe it that feels little and deeply personal in a way but is very relatable even as you come to know people that you might never meet in your life. she describes a country and immigrant life new here in this country. and you feel the smells and the sounds of a village very far away. you also feel an arrival in a town in new jersey that's surrounded by industry and people that are different and an attempt at assilation and what that does to the next generation and how it shapes them and informs them. it's thrilling. it's also thrilling to see the praise that the book has received, the well-deserved praise. the enthusiasm is not mine alone. it is every person who has had this book in their hands has felt the same excitement, the same emotional experience. it's enormously gratifying to say, here's elysha chang and here's her very special debut. >> you launched this. do you have another book in you? [ applause ] always good to see you, my friend. >> always good to see you, my sister. >> tell us about the meeting that led to all this. >> about seven years ago i had a chance to meet with the god father of latino marketing. he didn't start that way. in the meeting he was telling me how he started as a janitor working for this plant and frito lay. the job, the factory was losing jobs. so he wanted to save the factory. he said, if there was a spicy product that i could market to my community, he said i believe we would be able to save jobs. he called the ceo. the ceo gave him the chance to do it. what we now know is flaming hot came to be. the success of flaming hot propelled him from being the janitor to becoming one of the top executives in the company. after he told me his story, i said, i have got to make this into a movie. i didn't even know how i was going to do it at the time. i was so motivated and inspired, how he started as a janitor but thought about how he could help the company. >> there are some folks that have seen the movie and have heard his story and are going, i don't know. little bit of artistic license here? >> those that may say that haven't seen the movie yet. the movie, i believe, sets the record straight. lot of controversy that came out, we were already aware of that. this movie is really richard's story. we all incorporated what we know about how this came to be. when people see the movie, it is going to show how all of these things work together. when you see this film, richard is a true american hero. i know hollywood loves super heroes and that's fine. you can't put on a suit of iron. but you can be like richard, having a heart for service and wanting to make a difference in your community and succeed. >> i can see how passionate you are. >> it's my movie. i have been working on this for seven years. >> evagonna show up if i commit. when eva came in, she came in with her script. every page was dog eared. she communicated her vision. here's how i want to make this more authentic. what was interesting is she had never done a movie. i called the studio. i said, we found our director, eva longoria. they were like, has she done a movie? no. they're like, well, we aren't sure. i said just because she hasn't done a movie does not mean she's not a director. too often, people of color, we get dinged for not having an opportunity. if we were given the opportunity, it would reveal what we already are. eva came in as director. she did a brilliant presentation. they said, devon, you're right. she's the director. when you see this film, this is a brilliant testimony to her vision as a filmmaker. >> that's why you love having your company, to provide these opportunities, tell these stories? >> absolutely. this is why i came to hollywood. middle child of three boys. my father died when i was 9 years old

eva pilgrim is here with the story. good morning, eva. >> her lawyers say starbucks made her a white manager the scapegoat in the attempt to save face when it found itself in the midst of major backlash after two black men were arrested in a philadelphia store. the company firing her. a jury now finding in her favor. >> reporter: this morning a $25.6 million victory for a white former starbucks employee who accused the coffee giant of racial discrimination. a new jersey jury unanimously siding with the former regional manager shannon phillips, claiming her race was a determinative factor in starbucks decision to fire her in the wake of a 2018 racial fire storm. phillips wasn't present the day this viral video was recorded showing the arrest of two black men, dante robinson and rashawn nelson, who were waiting for a business meeting when the employee called 911, accusing them of trespassing. >> i have two gentlemen who are refusing to make a purchase or leave. >> reporter: their arrest sparking protests nationwide. >> what do we want? justice! when do we want it? now! >> reporter: prompting starbucks to close stores for a day for racial bias training and reaching a confidential financial settlement with the two men. phillips said she was not involved in the arrest in any way. according to her civil complaint filed in 2018, she claims she actively worked on crisis management efforts, but less than a month after the arrest, phillips was notified of her termination. according to court documents starbucks claims phillips appeared overwhelmed, frozen and lacked awareness of how critical the situation was for starbucks and its partners and all actions taken by starbucks with respect to ms. phillips were for nondiscriminatory reasons. >> starbucks wasn't necessarily under legal pressure, but they were under public pressure to act and to show that they were open to everyone of every race and origin and to show that they were not going to allow racism to foster within their organization. >> reporter: a black district manager testifying via zoom he thought phillips race played in starbucks decision to fire her, and that his race was a reason he was not terminated. >> other companies are definitely going to have to be much more thoughtful and clear about why they're exercising terminations when they're faced with this type of situation. >> we did reach out to starbucks. we were told they have no comment at this time. guys? >> thank you very much, evath of a high school football player. his family said he was driven to take his own life after falling victim to a social media scam. will reeve has that story. good morning, will. >> it's unfathomable. a teen driven to suicide by a pervasive scam. now the teen's parents are speaking out about their tragedy. overnight the parents of a michigan teenager speaking out about a growing social media scam they said led to the death of their 17-year-old son. >> three people from across the world came into my house that night while i was sleeping and murdered jordan. i had zero chance to stop it. >> reporter: john demay and jennifer butta opening up about so called sextortion teens which trick teens into sending explicit photos of themselves online only to become blackmailed. their son jordan becoming a victim of the scheme, later taking his own life. >> jordan was this outgoing young man. he had a smile that was contagious. he loved playing sports. >> he was handsome. he was popular. he was the
