evan, give us the latest. >> well, wolf, this is an extraordinary decision by the fbi director. fbi directors are supposed to serve a ten year term. congress designed that in the wake of the watergate scandal. as a way to insulate the fbi director from politics. but obviously, donald trump has made clear as recently as this weekend that he plans to change the leadership of the fbi. and so chris wray really took those hints, obviously, and made the decision that it was better for him to resign when the president, the new president, takes office at the end of this administration. and he made that announcement, speaking to an all hands meeting for the fbi. fbi employees this afternoon. listen to what he said i view this is the best way to avoid dragging the bureau deeper into the fray while reinforcing the values and principles that are so important in how we do our work. and you can hear there from the fbi director. wolf, you know, part of his consideration here was to get out of the way, because he could see in recent days there were a lot of attacks coming from republicans in co

evan. well, this is a much bigger, much broader sweep of members of congress and their staff than we knew about. >> i mean, we've previously heard from adam schiff and from eric swalwell, two representatives. schiff is about to be a senator of california, and we had heard them publicly discuss that they had been notified by their providers, by their service providers, that their records had been seized by the justice department earlier. now, this is a set of leak investigations that happened beginning in 2017, went for about 2 to 3 years. and so, again, we'd heard from those two members what we did not know, pam, is that there were 43 staff, both democrats and republicans. as a matter of fact, there were about 20 republicans and 2020 or so democrats who were whose records were seized. and among those was kash patel, who was at the time a staffer for devin nunes, the chairman of the house intelligence committee. now, one of the things that this report says, that there was no indication that

. >> cnn's evan perez joins us now.ow these fbi background checks are conducted with whom will the fbi speak? what are they going to be asking? >> well, jake, this is a very intrusive process. i talked to someone who has done them before, and they compared it to a colorectal examination while awake. i mean, this is very, very in-depth. and it goes all the way back to someone's to, in the case of hegseth or someone who's not been in government all the way back to their 18th birthday, the fbi investigators will be talking to previous employers people that they worked with all the way back to. they were to age 18. and part of the issue there is to try to get to to talk to people who know these, these applicants, people like hegseth, people who are going to be filling these thousands of government jobs that donald trump wants to fill. obviously, as part of his his incoming administration we're told that this is an investigation that can take as many as 60 interviews, some some of them take 10 to 14 days to conduct and all o

in the meantime, evan perez is with me and evan, the city of memphis said they they won't agree to federalhat right? >> right. what they what they're saying is that they want to first review the report and then dispute, or at least challenge some parts of it and keep in mind that this is about a crime suppression unit, that the memphis police was using to try to address crime in different parts of the city. and one of the things that the report says that the justice department report says is that you know, there have been some changes made since the tyree nichols killing. and so they're they recognize that some changes have been made. but typically what happens, jim, is that there is these agreements that are supervised by, supervised by a court that say you have to do these reforms and then there's a judge who oversees it as a monitor system that is in place to make sure that the police department improves those things are likely to go away in the next month. the judge the justice department, is going to be run by the trump administration, which doesn't like these and we saw this previous
