evan perez is here with something new. evan, what can you tell us?o assert executive privilege for the testimony of former justice department officials who may be called to testify before the committee. the january 6th committee. that is an important move because it means it paves the way for potential testimony of jeffery rosen. the acting attorney general during the time of the insur insurrection. he was also involved in the pressure campaign that the trump white house, mark meadows and others pushing to the justice department to say there was fraud in the days after president trump lost the election. so, he can testify to a lot of things. including the type of pressure that he was under and other officials were under and we'll see what else he can tell us about what he witnessed in those early days of january. >> one point of clarification. the current justice department is not going to stand in and try to block the testimony. does that mean that jeffery rosen will show up the minute he is called? >> well, potentially. it means when he shows up an

cnn's evan perez joins us now. , what are federal investigators saying specifically that tom barrack did? >> reporter: well, jake, he was acting on behalf of the uae without registering with the justice department as a foreign agent. and so that's what he's charged with. but among the things that prosecutors say he did is back in 2016 then candidate donald trump is making a speech on energy at the request of his clients in the uae, barrack allegedly inserted language praising the uae which the president delivered or the candidate trump then delivered during his speech. in another instance that prosecutors describe, they apparently -- the uae provided talking points for barrack's tv appearances. he was a prominent voice for trump if you remember during the years there, and apparently after one of those appearances, he sent an email to someone in the emirates saying, quote, i nailed it for the home team, according to prosecutors, that was a reference to the uae, not the united states. they also say that at one point t

evan perez has more. >> reporter: a federal judge in texas has ruled that the obama-era program that allows some undocumented immigrants to remain in this country is illegal and he blocked the government from accepting new applicants. hundreds of thousands of people who came to the united states as children are protected from deportation under a program known as the deferred action for childhood arrivals. the ruling from judge andrew hanan doesn't immediately cancel the program for the so-called dreamers who are already participating in it, but once again leaves them in devastating limbo. an appointee of george w. bush, he ruled that congress didn't authorize the homeland security department to create daca, but hanan also wrote it wouldn't be fair to immediately end the program so many people rely on. the justice department is widely expected to appeal the ruling, which could send it back to the supreme court, which previously blocked the trump admin administration's attempts to end the program. the high court didn't rule on whether the program was legal. evan perez, cnn, washington.

let's go to cnn's evan perez.gh prosecutors called him a serious flight risk. i guess it's good to be a billionaire. >> it's good to be a billionaire. this is a guy who probably hasn't flown on a commercial airliner in many, many, many years. a friend of his told me he probably hasn't stayed in anything but a four seasons in years. he's been spending time at the federal lockup in los angeles because the federal government said that he was a flight risk. so today the government and his lawyers struck a deal whereby he's going to get out for $250 million in bond, $5 million paid in cash. he's got a bunch of restrictions on where he can go, his travel because he has to be in court in brooklyn which is where he's facing these charges. and they're serious charges. it's charges that he was acting doing foreign lobbying on behalf of the united arab emirates, that he lied to the fbi, committed obstruction. he and another associate are both out -- or rather they're expected to be out. i think they're still going through th

cnn senior justice correspondent evan perez also has been reporting for us.n. matt, what are you learning, first of all, about the suspect accused of actually orchestrating the assassination and his possible motive? >> yeah, wolf. we went a few days without a significant update from authorities here in haiti. last night on sunday evening haitian authorities called a press conference to talk about this 63-year-old man born in haiti who authorities here believe is a real central figure in this assassination plot. what they are saying is that he came here by private plane in june after contracting a venezuelan security company based in south florida which he used to allegedly recruit these 26 columbia -- alleged columbian mercenaries and two americans who are believed to have carried out this assassination plot. according to authorities, he organized them here. initially, we're told, these men that he hired for hired to provide him some sort of personal security here on the island. but in the words of authorities, their mission changed over time, which we are to

evan perez joins us now. did the senior justice department officials respond to trump's deranged request? >> jake, these notes that were written down, that were hand-written notes by rich donahue, who was the acting deputy attorney general really show you that even though we know how much trump was pushing his big lie, it still shows you how much he was trying to do behind the scenes. and so what these officials were doing were pushing back on the president, telling him that they had investigated, there were hundreds of investigations, they had done all of the work, and they could not find any of the evidence that he was talking about. and, as you said just now, the president said, you know, you don't have to do anything, you just have to say that the election was corrupt and leave the rest to me and the republican congressmen. and when he was told that all of these claims that he was hearing that the president was hearing were false, some of them were conspiracy theories about some italian being behind -- al

perez and it -- st. louis fed president james bullard speaking. chicago fed president charles evansng, but in contrast, he thinks the job goal has been met. evans took a more cautious tone. the chicago president said the fed could begin tapering by year end if unemployment slides closer to 4.5%. >> here we are now in a strong rebound. the economy is recovering very strongly and going very well -- growing very well. the numbers are so large, i have a hard time seeing them in my head. i am exciting this year real gdp growth is going to be on the order of 75%, an extraordinary number. towards 100% or more, that comes with growing pains. but growth has been good. looking for 7% this year, 3% next year, which also is a very good level of growth. the kind of numbers i find a little more transparent in terms of naturalness or the unemployment rate numbers, even those are subject to a lot of interpretation given labor force participation variations. that i am looking for the end employment rate at the end of 2021 to be about 4.5%. we are at 5.9% unemployment right now, and we have come down
