we're on fairfax avenue. you had seen the big throng before.look here we have officers moving into this part of fair factio fax. we're right across from the farmers' market. if you look on the hips of some of the officers they have on plastic flexi-cuffs. i've covered enough of these to know when those come out, they intend on arresting people. they're moving a lot more fire power into this area. we heard the police clearly yell hold here. off in the distance you're going to see black smoke. something is on fire, we can't tell what. it seemed to be a vehicle fire in that direction. the protesters are headed that way. this is, as i said, where the police are making a stand, ana, and seemingly preparing to make arrests. we have seen a few arrests recently and we should say that a lot of this intersection got cleared out, the one behind me at fairfax and third when inexplicably a man in a red mustang drove through the protesters, cut their advance in half, drove another 120 yards walked out of the car and got arrested. it was a surreal scene. but

in this intersection they were having a difficult time clearing fairfax.e understand that some of these stores were looted. this is not far from where we were before where nordstrom's was looted as well as the ray ban glasses place. >> in relation to where you were and kyung is, how far apart are you guys? in the same neighborhood, near each other? >> we are near each other, but this is a vast expanse of a protest demonstration and we will call it arrest area. i think it is for an entire square mile. this went from fairfax back to third street, beverly, all of these streets in los angeles. when you walk around here, don, it is surreal. you see these different skirmishes or places where there has been mass arrests or looting or whatever it is. you see someone else being led off. they have not flat stated it this way, but it seems that once that curfew hit, they came out with an attitude of we are not going to play. if you look across the other way, the officers blocking the people sitting down, they will arrest everybody. we have seen in other actions like

are going on over several blocks in the middle of the westside of los angeles is an area called the fairfax district it's a pretty upscale. shopping and entertainment area and there are various sites in that area that are the scenes of confrontations between lines of police and large groups of demonstrators at least one police officer we're told has been injured and has been taken away there have been a number of arrests and there as you can see here are cars on fire it doesn't appear that there are any buildings on fire at the moment. and as of just a few hours ago the mayor of los angeles eric garcetti declared that there would be a curfew imposed beginning at 8 pm that's a little less than 5 than 3 hours from now coinciding with nightfall and rob what sort of what sort of police presence have we seen on the streets there in los angeles. if there is a police presence but i'm struck by the pictures where you see a really theon line of police officers facing down a large group of protesters the mayor in his press conference pleaded for restraint he said that he and the the police chief mich

we were a few blocks away in the fairfax district near the drove shopping area where there was some looting as well. around 8:00 police started pushing people back, then they started re-opening the streets to clear out the streets. but now we are seeing some of these spot fires popping up throughout businesses, whether they have been broken into or just for some reason, a lot of these fires are under investigation when they go on. the particular cause will take some time to figure out. this is a scene we are seeing play out throughout los angeles. whether it's a fire of a store, a trash can or fireworks being shot off. in other parts of the community, in particular in briefly hills. that's where we are seeing looting going on down rodeo drive. the mayor here, eric garcetti called in the national guard, and they are supposed to be here within four or five hours and help out with whatever tomorrow brings. rick: these are remarkable pictures. i read the lapd affected 500 arrests last night. have you heard about arrests tonight? and has the curfew had an effect. reporter: just after 8:00 they s
