there has been a lot of fire activity in fairfield. around 4:00 today, abc 7 reporter cornell bernard who we just spoke with caught video of this fire off 80 near red top road. he mentioned this earlier. this fire was contained in less than an hour. >> we have more breaking news. another grass fire west of petaluma has destroyed a barn and tractors. it's burning there the area of middle 2 rock road. it's reached seven acres. the petaluma police department at the moment this fire is not threatening is the city of petaluma. no injuries reported. >>> a brushfire threatened homes in san jose just a short time ago. sky fire was over the scene. firefighters reported heavy smoke in the area and closed down roads in the neighborhood. vta light rail service in the area was also impacted. it started around 3:15. firefighters had a handle on it by 5:00. no one was hurt. >>> yet more breaking news in san francisco. paramedics have rushed construction worker to the hospital following a serious on-the-job accident inside muni's twin peaks tunnel. >>

it happened around 9:00 this morning on interstate 80 near manuel campos parkway in fairfield. allen martin is in our newsroom with more on what we're learning about the officer. >> the chp officer was a 19 year veteran of the force and a former marine. he's been identified as 46-year- old kirk griess out of the solano chp office. authorities say griess was on the shoulder of the road conducting a traffic stop on a saturn suv when a white chevy pickup truck veered to the right and struck the officer and that saturn. chopper 5 was flying over the scene where you can see debris scattered across the highway. the crash shut down that road for hours as crews worked to clear the scene. both griess and the driver of the saturn were taken to a local hospital in fairfield where they died from their injuries. the driver of the chevy truck was also hurt and then outside the hospital you can see a line of chp motorcycles, vehicles, officers. this is video now of officer griess from earlier this year where he was running a motorcycle agility course during an annual training competition in f

the nelson fire in fairfield forced hundreds of people from their homes yesterday afternoon. it ignited around 5:00 p.m. east of interstate 80 near the p paradise valley golf course. it burned 1,000 acres. one family lost everything. this is video of their home going up in flames last night. a mental health facility for invats was evacuated in vacaville, and a senior living facility. >> we were scrambling to get possibly 300 individuals that were in that home, many of them wheelchair bounds. by the time we loaded up maybe about four buss the wind changed to where we didn't have to evacuate that home. >> packed up the family photos and the birth certificates and i'm going to pack up the truck and get it out of here. >> evacuations were lifted around midnight. pg&e is working to restore power outages. peabody road is closed at chuck hammond drive because of downed power lines. we have been following this fire since it broke out yesterday afternoon. our team of reporters posted pictures and video and we continue to post important information. follow us on twitter. >>> a horizon
