and also fareed zakaria host of fareed zakaria gps. let's take another look at this air strike on this market in gaza. it is fairly grisly. let's look. >> as we -- i want to look at the aftermath of this, because several explosions go off. why would a market be targeted in this conflict? >> i think the thing to remember, don, is that gaza is one of the most densely populated places on the planet. it's about 120 square miles. you've got 1.7, 1.8 million people living there. it is essentially an urban environment. and i think it just reminds us tragically that this whole idea that we have become used to in the united states that there is something like precision warfare, that you can use drones and use highly targeted munitions and sort of use computers and somehow take out the fog of war. take out, you know, the reality of collateral casualty, the reality of errors. what gaza reminds you of is really the essential nature of war. this stuff happens all the time. this is what war looks like. and some of it is collateral damage. some of it

joining me to talk about this is fareed zakaria host of fareed zakaria. they say they believe that those iraqi forces will stay and fight for baghdad. is this what the conflict has basically come down, is it holding baghdad? is it all won or lost in that city? >> that's a hugely important issue, right? whether you lose the capital or not, but baghdad is now essentially a shia city. it used to be mixed. sunnis have been driven out and of course, there are still many, many sunni, but it's mostly a shia city and has become part of the shia-dominated government's strong hold. so the reason that the iraqi government lost lots of territory and these are scenarios. the locals were, if not sympathetic to the insurgents and sympathetic to isis they were pretty anti-government and that's not true in baghdad and the army will fight it as a shiite core that will fight there, but it it only reenforces what is the central element here, jake, which has now turned into a sectarian civil war. >> the u.s. military advisers who are in iraq, we are told they'll make recommen

as we wait for him, let me bring in fareed zakaria. if i can off the top, get you to react to the news cease-fire rejected. >> reporter: it is unfortunate, but the israeli cabinet and this israeli prime minister have really decided what they want to do is to take this opportunity to destroy the tunnels that hamas has built, destroy a lot of the rockets that they have accumulated, which is understandable. israel faces a significant and real threat from it all. but we have seen this movie before. >> we have. >> you do this, you get rid of them. and if everything else stays the same, hamas or the successor will in some way or the other accumulate this kind of thing in the next few years. this is not high tech stuff, it is fairly easy to do over time, and we'll be back a year from now, two years from now. tough times unfortunate. i think a lot of innocent people are suffering and it would have been i think useful to have that cease-fire just to also have a time to think about not just the tactics of this. the tactics we understand, israel

also "new york times" columnist nick christoph and our very own fareed zakaria, host of "fareed zakaria gps." the obama says it does not think the government of ukraine has defenses in the region where this flight went down. you said it's important to talk about not only who may be responsible, but why this is happening. >> right. i think what is important to understand, the government of ukraine doesn't really control this part of ukraine. this part of ukraine is essentially controlled by pro-russian separatists who have been funded, armed, trained by the russian government, probably includes some russian special operations forces or agents. so the chance that the ukrainian government would have done this, outside of the equipment issue, is very remote because they're not actually in charge of this area. >> right. >> and this points to the incredibly dangerous situation there. because putin says he recognizes the ukrainian government. he recognizes the government in kiev, and he wants to work with them. but simultaneously, he has maintained a special operation, essentially, a kind of k

i want to bring in the host of fareed zakaria gps, fareed zakaria.e we get to europe in particular, the french continuing with the sale of advanced warships to russia, i just wonder where is the outrage? because the responses so far you're talking about incremental increase in sanctions, still negotiating access to the site. do not seem to match the enormity of this crime. >> you're right, jim. we've seen a pretty strong rhetoric coming out of samantha powers and president obama. we've seen some of it coming out of the british prime minister finally and the australian prime minister. very little you notice out of continental europe, the big powers, germany, france, even the dutch have been remarkably restrained given the enormity of the tragedy here. and i think that part of the problem here is that europe has very deep economic ties, very deep energy dependence on russia. in the french case in particular, france has always prided itself in being, you know, a kind of bridge to russia. they've always prided themselves on being a big military exporter.
