>> the outlook for wells fargo is to grow earnings 10% a year no matter. what i think they've proven they can do it again. it's a very diversified company, very strong in the u.s. while it has the same issues in many ways as the big banks like jp morgan, it has less of them and doesn't have those big derivative exposures that face increasing regulatory hurdles this year. wells fargo should be just fine. >> give as you preview of what to expect from other banks. bank of america reports tomorrow, citi on thursday. what's going to be the tone from their earnings? pretty much the same of what we heard today? >> i think they've basically gotten the estimates. the companies have kind of gotten analysts down to where they want them. after the third quarter, earnings estimates came down two reasons. number one is what you mentioned, suze, organize. under a lot of pressure as rates rise fuel refinancing. secondly, the capital market activity. fourth quarter is never a big time for trading. a lot of guys go on vacation especially with that wednesday christmas holida

wells fargo.avid morgan is relying on the mortgage business for its bottom morgan thatj.p. wells fargo is relying on the mortgage business for its bottom line and jpmorgan is a different bank. jpmorgan will have higher investment fees which will not make up for trading revenue and everyone is looking for details on regulatory settlements and legal costs and return on capital with perhaps higher dividends, maybe a cutback in a share buyback plan. >> what's interesting about the plans to pay out fees because of the regulatory actions is whether or not analysts will be asking questions about the ongoing cost of compliance. once you have paid the fines, what happens them? you can guess those costs can get pretty high. >> they have been getting high in that different banks have had to hire more people in the compliance and legal department. wells fargo had to trim a lot of its mortgage banking business. >> we don't pay as much attention to wells fargo. today, wells fargo, those are two very different t

jpmorgan be on the top line, wells fargo beat on the bottom line.t thrill you in either sense? >> it beat analysts' estimates but this is basically a cost-cutting exercise. the banks don't have a lot of disability on revenue. a lot of the had down estimates from the street. overall we are suffering financial regression imposed upon us by the fed, the banks really don't have a lot of lift on the revenue line. a lot of future excitement here, this is about watching expenses that wells fargo took $800 million out of a $10 billion awed non-interest expense category. that is amazing. think about that. it is cutting people. liz: i get excited by we made some much money here, there and everywhere. when you talk about auto lending some of these names of come through that are auto lending numbers and decent margins on something like that but what gives you hope? and if you could, revert back to january of last year, did you think it would be this year good year? >> it was good because stocks caught up in the second half. liz: could that happen this time? >>

what do you think about wells fargo this year? consistent growth that they have been able to report, continues to push forward. this is the 16th consecutive sequential growth in quarterly earnings. what we're looking for is for that to continue. as we did see some compression in net interest margin. you really need to dissect that into two buckets. one piece is that you had such extraordinary deposit growth that was parked on balance sheets at low interest rates on asset side. that had no impact on net interest income which increased about 1% this quarter. so income continuing to grow. margins is a metric reflective of interest rates. but growth they're creating in balance sleet and steepening of yield curve is beginning to show some progress there. tracy: lizzie, talk big picture on financials because for a while how go the financials how go the market. >> yeah. tracy: are we finally starting to see they will turn around and increase in interest rates will do them all some good? >> yeah i think that's the point. what we're seeing

the ceo of wells fargo said the same thing as well and they don't have to. they're cautious, they'll be cautious. i think that's a good sign. speaking of the financials the big theme of 2014 health care and financials have shown real improvement. you see the bank index, the bkx, big bank stocks, bkx is at a five-year high and you know that's good. we've had a number of the bank earnings pretty good on where the trends are right here. stronger capital liquidity. lower credit costs, lower expenses. net margin income not great but okay. the lower expenses that's a real big thing. did you see citigroup this morning operating expenses dropped 5.9%.

bank united, wells fargo, and u.s. bancorp have all seen their earnings grow over the past three quarters. these banks also offering dividend yield that is higher than the s&p 500's average of 2%. other attractive hybrid stocks are in the technology space. cisco has seen its earnings grow by 18% over the past year. it's also sitting on $50 billion of cash plus analysts say a recovery in emerging markets could help shares outperform in 2014, and, yes, yield seekers, cisco has consistently increased its dividend payout over the past three years. another tech name that provides consistent earnings growth and a dividend, security player symantec. analysts say growing concerns over data breaches could result in corporations allocating more capital to its security software, which could provide a boost to symantec's bottom line. while technology is generally favored by wall street in a rising-rate environment, not all expers are expecting tech shares to outperform in 2014. >> within the sector of technology, where companies h

if you had an account at wells fargo u.s.third and used direct deposit, you could get an advance up to half your paycheck but it would cost you $2 in interest for every $20 you borrowed. that added up to a rate of 120% which looked cheaper than other lenders which could reach 300%. the problem, the banks pay themselves back from your account as soon as the check hit which usually was in a matter of days. advocacy groups have said the real interest rate on those loans because of that, because they are only outstanding for a couple days was far higher. the center for responsible lending said these loans were only outstanding for about ten days, meaning the effective interest was 365%. some consumers have said such loans got them through rough patches. others have said it drove them into a vicious cycle of having to borrow over and over again. that of course piques the interest of the fdic. last year, guidances were issued against such predatory tactics. banks threw in the towel. this was a high revenue generating product for th

let's talk about wells fargo and investment banking.about the growth of investment banking and the growth they expect it to show in the next reported quarter. right now, it's about 5% of the business. but you say it's not going to ever be more than 10% of earnings. so, is that going to be the driver? what gets you most jazzed about wells fargo's performance in the most recent quarter that closed? >> investment banking has been our fastest grow growing business in the last five years. that's because it's a low base. there's never been one horse that's driven the stagecoach. it takes many of them. we have 90 different businesses. in most of them, we're gaining market share and wallet share. although it is true that the fastest part of those has been investment bank. but again, from a very low base. >> mr. kovacevich, the rise in the banks across the board has been pretty significant. are the banks as healthy, in your opinion, as the rise in their stocks suggest that they are? >> yes. i think they're very healthy. you know, we -- the capit
