so the fda is revoking the approval of the drug avastin as a breast cancer treatment. chief science correspondent robert bazell has more on this highly charged decision. >> reporter: shannon morgan, who has advanced breast cancer, is devastated by the fda commissioner's decision that avastin can no longer be marketed as a treatment for her disease. >> it's heartbreaking. i cried. my first thought was she just gave me a death sentence. >> reporter: at three fda hearings on whether avastin should be approved for breast cancer, experts repeatedly testified that despite emotional appeals. >> i owe the last seven and a half years to avastin. >> avastin gives us hope. >> reporter: the evidence did not prove the drug was effective. still, fda commissioner margaret hamburg said her decision to follow the advisory panel's recommendation was a difficult one. >> sometimes despite the hopes of investigators, patients, industry and even the fda itself, the results of rigorous testing can be disappointing. >> reporter: avastin remains on the market as a treatment for several other c

so obviously the fda feeling it is safe. but they say that the fda's logic and numbers are flawed.s is to protect our food and medicine. they could back down if it wanted to. it is strongly saying this food is safe for everybody. >> sounds like they've been saying that all along. if you wanted to eat that much shrimp, it sounds like it would be pretty hard to do because there's a serious decline in the harvest this season. is that right? i mean, how bad is it? >> yeah, there's no question about it. we talked to a lot of shrimpers and oystermen and crabbers and the leaders of these people that work on the water. they say their catch is 50 to 80% down from before this oil spill. now there's been nothing scientific about this. right now the louisiana department of wildlife and fisheries are compiling a report that will come out in 2012 about this. so we don't have the science yet, but everyone is saying this. they're saying that it could be one of two things or two things it could be. one is the oil spill, and also the people of the gulf coast have been dealing with severe flooding. s

why did the fda make this decision?g of course from patients with met static breast cancer who say that benefits outweigh the risks. >> sure. so that's exactly what the fda is weighing when they make a decision about initial approval of a drug, and then when they re-evaluate new kefd that's come online with regard to whether the drug should remain on the market. they're weighing the risks of taking the drug and all patients who receive the drug are subject to risks against the potential benefits of that drug. and in the case of avastin, the initial clinical trials of the drug in women with breast cancer suggested that there was a substantial benefit from avastin with really a reasonable and very acceptable risk profile. that led to its initial approval using a mechanism called accelerated approval for a drug that looks particularly promising where the fda is trying to get that drug to women with breast cancer. the followup of an accelerated approval requires additional studies be done by the company who makes avastin to
