that helped firefighters get here more quickly and as firefighters worked to knock down the flames, they battled layers of construction materials. >> there's a couple of layers of roofing so because they had the original layer of roof, they put a roof on top of a roof, like a metal clasp roof itself so lots of voids and spaces. >> reporter: i'm told the fire damaged both floors and the attic of this home. firefighters say the home was connected to electricity but not gas and they are still working to determine the cause of the fire. again, there was no one home at the time the fire started. the investigator is expected to arrive on scene around 9:00 this morning. of course this daylight will help aid them in figuring out where this fire started. and coming up at 6:45 i'll have more on what made this home particularly dangerous for firefighters to battle that morning fire. live in san mateo, katie utehs, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> a man hit by a caltrain in san francisco. that happened at about midnight at mission bay drive. caltrain says the man was hit by the last northbound train. he was

this is going to be a long night for firefighters. again, they are hoping that the weather will be cooperating with them. >> yesterday, i think they had about 600 firefighters battling this thing. is that still about the number they have working on it? >> reporter: what we have now are 950 firefighters, that's pretty much the number we've seen throughout the day. that number of firefighters expected to stay on the line as they try to continue the containment. what we have as far as the latest information from firefighters is a 20% containment. they really want to try to get as much of a circle around this fire as possible, until they have it none of them are feeling comfortable about this. the red flag warning, that is the hot desert winds, all of that is a huge problem for firefighters. the weather is going to change. they are hoping that it will cooperate and they will be able to get that containment line drawn around it. >> have you been seeing a lot of water drops also throughout the day? >> reporter: we actually have. the reason

what is the latest on the firefight? >> reporter: ann, we actually just got an update on that and the firefighters were able to hold the line overnight. the fire did not grow from last night to this morning and it's now 30% contained so they are making some progress but be it very small. >> how many homes have been damaged so far there? >> yeah, at this point, we have 4000 homes being threatened by the fire still. only 15 though had been damaged. none have been destroyed but just damage. we saw yesterday the fire get very very close to a very high end neighborhood in this area. million dollar homes, the flames came within 100 feet of those homes. firefighters were able to back them off. the neighborhood did not go up in flames but there's still mandatory evacuations for a lot of folks in many communities. 800 people have been displaced so far. >> have you been to any of the evacuation centers yet? we know people are often standing around not knowing what to expect, what's going on with their home and when they might be a

more than 950 firefighters are battling hard to protect surrounding homes. the santa ana winds have died down a bit, but you can see it's still extremely windy. firefighters say the flames are moving fast and they are concerned the shifting winds could make this fire unpredictable. crews are setting control fires to clear heavy dry brush while air tankers drop water and fire retardant on hot spots. the fire is just 10% contained and damaged 15 homes and threatens 4,000 more. entire neighborhoods about 20 miles west of malibu were evacuated while animals ran for safer ground. the fire swept past john shipper's home. >> just larger peak behind me was then fully engulfed and you could see smoke in front of it. >> reporter: firefighters are hoping this weekend's forecast of rain and cooler temperatures will bring some relief. and allen, it continues to be really dicey out here because the flames and some hot spots just keep flaring up. and factwe justet some new numbers, but this is one of the most fluctuating fires with these erratic winds. we're hearing that t

and weather is a huge factor for firefighters. we just got the current conditions, west winds at 15 minutes. they are forecast to pick up this afternoon only about 20 miles per hour with some stronger gusts. temperature-wise, right now, we are in the upper 60s. so the good news, we're not seeing those hot, dry winds which of course makes it very hard for the firefighters to fight. and again, we are looking at a live aerial view from chopper 5. you can see just a few minutes ago we saw these large plumes of white smoke. you can see that dissipating now, which is a good sign that firefighters are really getting it under control. these are aerials from just a short time ago. you see a lot of smoke and burned earth. we don't know how many acres have burned, but you can see that it is close to some homes in some of those shots. very close to a neighborhood and as we said, very close to a high school. at this point, we don't know of any evacuations in the area. it seals to be under control. there is a road separating the open area where

the fire started early, a lot more firefighters are needed. and quickly. abc7 news reporter joins us. training is underway? >> cal fire is in the hope stretch of trying to get the yellow fire contained by some time this evening and firefighters are literally racing against the chock trying to get as much done as possible before that record heat moves in. >> cal fire is on the move early in sonoma county, a final big push for containment on a fire that scorched 125 acres and destroyed an old redwood home fueled by wind, low humidity, and heat. crews face similar problems today. >> the big challenge today is going to be the heat advisory. >> with temperatures in the 90's and steep terrain, cal fire must dig by hand at times a 500' line of containment today. they must work fast while temperatures are still cool. >> we try to get a lot of our work done in the cooler hours, at night, and in the morning and the evening. we make that big push when we have the cooler weather in our favor. >> with the early string fires it has prompted cal fire to beef up staffing.
