kpix 5's jessica flores reports. it is a new era. >> reporter: that's right, anne. state regulators starting to give out those licenses earlier this week. they gave out 20 licenses two of them here in the bay area. one is behind me. this is buddy's can bit shop. and they are really gearing up for that new year's day opening. that's when they are officially able to start buying and selling marijuana. that's january 1st. and since 2016, californians could use recreational marijuana but they couldn't buy cannabis without a medical marijuana card. now the product is going to be regulated and taxed and state officials regulating the product say they are expecting a surge of businesses to apply to sell recreational marijuana in the coming weeks. the state opened up the online application site last friday and buddy's cannabis shop is one of those that got approved here in san jose. the bureau of cannabis control says they have already received 200 applications across the state. now, even though it is going to be legal to buy and sell recreational marijuana, cities and coun

jessica flores reports. >>> reporter: 3,000 city workers back on the job. you will see street sweepers and librarians and parking enforcement. but one of the clearest signs things are changing in oakland is that they are actually cleaning up homeless encampments on sixth and brush streets. they have been out there yesterday actually handing out pink flyers to folks telling them that they would be evicted from the area. the city has deemed the area uninhabitable and will be clearing it out by today. we spoke to a resident there and he has been watching people who live there for months removing their belongings and leaving. >> they are trying to get away fast. >> reporter: the city's plan is to get folks to move into temporary housing set up on a lot on sixth and brush streets. the city has set up 20 "tuff sheds" for homeless who live in the area. the city also says social workers and health providers will be visiting the "tuff shed" community regularly to help the homeless in the area. now, meanwhile, back here at city hall, negotiations aren't happening rig

jessica flores is -- are entering that are fourth day of a strike. jessica flores is in oakland with the latest to resolve this dispute. >>> reporter: 3,000 workers are on strike again today. this is the fourth day and it could go into next week. right now, there's no end in sight if you ask the union. folks out here say they want to go back to work but say that the mayor's offer is unfair. the main sticking point is money. last night, city leaders made their best and final offer. they bumped up the raise in a second year of the two-year contract. there was no guarantee of a raise in the second year. now they are guaranteeing a 1% wage increase and if they can afford it they will give a total of 2%. the union is asking for a 4% raise in the second year of the contract. so right now, the two sides are basically 3% apart. the city's also offering $50,000 to convert part time library positions into full time positions. but the union is saying this isn't good enough. and they say their workers are getting priced out of their own city. >> we're going to s

for the latest, let's go to kpix 5's jessica flores who is live in oakland.essica. >> reporter: hey, kenny. i'm in front of the district offices here and this is where a lot of outrage is going to be aimed at officials here today. parents, teachers, school principals, students, upset over $9 million in budget cuts. the vote came down after a really long meeting last night that stretched late into the night around 10:30 p.m. when that vote came down. a room was packed with those people protesting these cuts. they chanted boos to the midyear cuts and after about 5 hours the school board voted 6- 1 could cut $9 million. $5million cut from the central office. $4million cut from school sites. this comes after years of overspending and lax budget oversight. the superintendent says they need the cuts to keep the directly afloat financially but the union says these cuts are excessive. >> they do have to cut know toward make the 1.2 reserve. that's a legal requirement. and they probably have to add more for special ed. funds and transportation because we know those go

for the latest, let's go to jessica flores. >>> reporter: good morning. total of $9 million in budget cuts. we're here in front of the district offices, where a lot of people are outraged right now at district officials. the vote came down after several hours, a long meeting late into the night and district officials basically said their hands were tied and they had to do this to keep the district financially afloat. last night parents, teachers, principals, even students packed the room. they chanted boos to the midyear cuts and after about 5 hours the school board voted 6-1 to cut $9 billion. $5million from the central office. school sites will lose $4 million. the vote comes after years of overspending and critics say lax oversight of the budget. teachers say they have old books and inadequate supplies already. >> it's not acceptable. this is a manufactured crisis. >> reporter: according to the proposal, 32 district office jobs will be cut. but the cuts will not affect counselors, nurses or custodians. teachers are also going to lose out on money for b

jessica flores reports. >>> reporter: good morning. recreational marijuana is legal, but it was illegal to buy and sell recreational marijuana and it will be until january 1st. the first batch of businesses got their licenses to go ahead and sell that product and this is one of them. buddy's cannabis behind me here in san jose, one of two places in the bay area where you will be able to buy recreational marijuana and they are gearing up for those new year's day sales. starting january 1st, it will now be legal to buy and sell cannabis for recreational use. the state will regulate and tax the product whereas before since 2016, californians could only use recreational marijuana but couldn't buy it. officials are expecting a surge of businesses to apply to sell it in the coming weeks. the state opened up the online application site last friday and the bureau of cannabis control says they have already received 200 applications across the state. now, even though it's going to be legal to buy and sell from shops, cities and counties can stil
