tonight in the hazing scandal at florida a&m. trassmann has learned that investigators are talking to more than 30 students and alumni who they believe may have participateed in the hazing that killed a member of the marching band. mark? >> reporter: scott that large number of witnesses partly explains why investigators are still building a case that could result in murder charges. and today trustees rejected calls to suspend this university's president. florida a&m trustees let president james ammons keep his job in part because of florida's politics, worries about the school's accreditation and the board's asserting its independence. the pressure is still on him? >> the pressure is very much on him. >> reporter: al lawson, an alum, is a member of the task force ammons appointed to tend school's decades-long culture of hazing. to >> to his critics ammons strikes them as a guy who wasn't on top of it. the board was not prepared to name an interim. if you suspend him today, the university floats along as a ship without a rudder. >>

the marching 100 has long been the pride of florida a&m university. , one resulting in the death of the band's drum major robert champion, it's a campus in mourning. >> what's the mood been like here? >> the mood has been really sad. the monday coming back to school was really quiet. >> police are now investigating a culture of alleged hazing within the band in this 911 cape, you can hear band members on a bus with champion desperately trying to save him. >> are you with him right now? >> yes, i'm with him, ma'am. he's not breathing. i tried to give him cpr and he started to vomit. >> champion died at the hospital november 19th. not even two weeks before that, another student told police she was rushed to the hospital with injuries after a several week-long initiation period. something that former drum major a.j. richardson went underground after the school declared a zero tolerance policy on hazing. >> those things that began as innocent pranks have been added to over the years. we were asked to do push-ups, but we did not experience the kind of hazin

but to single out florida a&m and historical black colleges, this is a problem that exists not just in and throughout florida and the country. i pulled a record is between schools with this problem and we need to address it. a unique problem at florida a&m yufrts and let me also say that when you look at solutions, we need to look at, we don't just throw out, i've heard people say let's do away with the band. with sororities and fraternities. if you have a problem with a police officer, you don't do away with the entire police force. you correct it. that's what we need to do here. >> i think at many universities and colleges, hazing situations that go unnoticed, you're quoted as saying florida governor rick scott overstepped his bounds by calling for amonos to be suspended. why do you feel he overreached, if you look at the records, there are these incidents of hazing within the band itself. >> let's be clear. florida has a board of trustees, a board of region, a board that regulates the institutions. and clearly for the government to step in like he did, jeopardizes accreditation stat

now to a scandal at another university, florida a&m. the medical examiner has ruled the death of the member of a marching band was a homicide-- a homicide by hazing. mark strassmann is on that story. >> reporter: robert champion, a healthy 26-year-old college band drum major, was dead within an hour after he was hazed last month on a band bus. the report revealed champion had extensive contusions of his chest, arms, shoulder and back and blunt-force trauma from his hazing attack made his body hemorrhage and go into shock. he bled to death internally. ruling his death a homicide means his hazers could be charged with murder. >> you just kind of wonder what kind of people are these people that are doing this? >> reporter: pam and robert champion, sr., the drum major's parents, have been demanding full prosecution to send a clear message about hazing. >> the one that put his hand on him, did the beating, should be dealt with harshly. >> reporter: champion's death spotlighted a systemic 40-year history of hazing within florida a&m's famed ma

mark strassmann reports on the investigation. >> reporter: the marching 100 is the face of florida a& high energy, precision performers who played at president obama's inauguration, but the death last month of 26-year-old drum major robert champion exposed a scourge the band a longtime director admits he could not control. would you agree there was a culture of hazing? >> there is a culture of hazing. >> reporter: dr. julian white became head band director in 1998 but he was fired four days after champion was found alone and unresponsive in a band bus. when they were gig c.p.r., he was on the bus. >> yes. >> reporter: was he conscious? >> no. >> reporter: the cause of death is still under investigation, but police who interviewed band members believe hazing is to blame. so does white. he suspects champion was beaten in a hazing ritual. for years, he says he tried to crack down on hazing with workshops and a zero-tolerance policy but he could not break the band's secret abusive culure. >> the saxophones are gestapo. the char nits are clones. >> reporter: it's like gang names. >> yes. >

lowe's decision came after a florida group opposed the show. a local station said 30 counterprotestors showed up to support lowe's. >>> the hazing scandal at florida a&m university may soon lead to a lawsuit. a freshman said is vicious hazing left her leg so badly injured she had to go to the hospital. her attorney is going to join me next. >>> but first, a national report released just this week finds that nearly half of america's public schools failed federal achievement standards. how can parents help turn around a failing school? we get some advices from from steve perry in this edition of "perry's principles". >> there are ways that you can improve the school. the first is that you as a parent have to get involved. you have to meet with the principal and the teachers there and you have to come and be solution-oriented. coming in and pointing out problems doesn't help anybody. we see the same problems that you do. talk to other parents and see what they think. get your apta together and as a group be solution or intented. talk about improvin

professor, a university like florida a & m. they say they have the no hazing policy, clearly, it's an open secret this is happening. how much does a school, do they know about what's going on? how much do they care about actually stopping it? >> i won't say how much they care about it. but let's cut to the chase. everybody at that school from the band director to the students to the administrators to the president, they know that this is a practice that goes on in these bands. it also goes on in black greek letter organizations which the bands are mimicking. they're very clear on that. when they say they don't know about it, they're either lying or they should be fired for negligence. this is going on throughout the south of hbcu. it's going on predominantly white universities. clearly the policies do not work. you are having people injured around the country. you're having people killed. and so what the bands, what other organizations are really saying to these schools and administrators is this the way we do things. this is th

i'm not going to be there. >> florida a&m's president, though, has spoken at length, telling jason carrollterday that hazing at a&m has shrouded in "a veiled secrecy." >> one of the things we have found with hazing is that there is a -- there is a veil of secrecy. this is a culture not just here at florida a&m university. it's on college and university campuses all across america. >> that suggestion that no one could have known flies in the face of common sense. critics and experts say ammons either was or should have been aware of the problem. they know about bria hunter's beating two weeks before champion's death. problems with the band were apparently common knowledge. 26 members were excelled for hazing shortly before champion's death. here's more from 1989 to 2001, three members were badly beaten two sued. one collected a settlement and the other a lawsuit worth $1.8 million. to top all that, band hazeings are the norm at other historically black colleges and universities. we'll have more on that shortly from guest professor ricky jones, author of "black haze." first, the latest from

, the florida a&m presidentnted. i think it's seriously warranted. if we look at the penn state situation, for instance, there's been a lot of talk about jerry sandusky and joe paterno but in academic circles there's talk about graham spanier, seen as an ideal university president, but when things like this happen on your watch, and you don't take appropriate steps to speak to those things proactively, then changes have to be made, so spanier was out and i think the same thing is happening with ammons and if these moves are made more often i think presidents will be more aggressive in speaking to issues like hazing at famu. >> what do you think is at the core of this kind of hazing? i don't think a lot of people think about being a band as a place where there's hazing but there are subgroups within this band at florida a&m, a group from georgia which apparently robert champaign was part of and there are all of the different subgroups have their code of discipline. what gets to the core of this in your opinion? >

but there are sub-groups within this band at florida a&m. group from georgia, which apparently robert champion was part of. and there are all these different sub-groups, i guess, have their own kind of codes of discipline. what gets to the core of this, in your opinion? >> the drive of students to belong. and that's why arguments that are made by folk who say, look, people who consent to this are the folks who really have to stop and the practice will go away. they're absolutely wrong. you cannot put the entire onus on a group of students who usually are between the ages of 18 and 24 years old. and they are driven by the desire to belong. so they're going to do a whole lot of things to belong. folks who will not submit to the behavior are folks who are not going to join the band, not going to join the greek letter organizations, any of these. so that's what's at the core of it. the bands are incredibly popular. students will join it, want to be accepted, they don't want to be socially ostracized. but the president and his administration shoul

florida a and m has failed this child, this family. this has to stop. hen bria reported it that it was a problem and it knew when champion died they had a problem. again, now we see three people in court today. we've seen shawn hobson, aaron goldson and we've been able to learn that this might have been a several week-long period of hazing at the university. bria hunter saying that it resulted in her broken leg and blood clots. again, we've also learned here just in the last few minutes from hunter's attorney that bria will be leaving the university. she's leaving an $80,000 plus scholarship. she will be withdrawing the university concern about retaliation. >> concern about retaliation. i suppose we don't yet know the reasons behind the beating. i'm just going to throw that out there. as i read the statement from the school, this is what we know. the board of trustees and hope that through these arrests all involved in perpetuating this culture will begin to view hazing as a serious matter. so what has the ip university, done, george, to discipline other

new developments in the florida a&m marching band hazing death. of drum major robert champion jr. is now a homicide. the medical examiner officially blaming hazing. the autopsy report released just today describes a beating so brutal it caused massive internal bleeding which killed the otherwise healthy 26-year-old less than an hour later. the report laid out the final minutes of champion's life, saying, and i quote, immediately after the hazing incident, he complained of thirst and fatigue. minutes later, he noted loss of vision and soon after had a witnessed arrest. the report is talking about robert champion's heart stopping. all of this happening so fast those around champion couldn't get him to help -- couldn't get him the help he needed to save his life. as you can hear from the 911 tape. >> okay. is he awake? >> he's not -- he wasn't responding. we thought he was breathing. he was making noises. but i don't even know if he's breathing now. >> okay. is he awake? do you know? >> his eyes are open. his eyes are open. he's not responding. >> oka
