flynn jr. as subject in its criminal inquiry. investigators probing his work the lobbying work of his father, mike flynn. this is an exclusive nbc news report. flynn is now one of only three formal subjects in this probe. that's not good news for the flynn family. flynn jr. has worked in government and business for his father, traveling with him everywhere from trump tower during the transition to moscow to celebrate the russia outlet and sit next to vladimir putin. this is breaking today so we go straight to kenainian and he broke the story with two of our colleagues. it is big to identify anyone as a subject of probe of why is mike flynn jr. under this scrutiny and how did you get four sources to confirm it? >> as you mentioned, we have a dogged team working this story for days and we found right people who are familiar with this. they confirmed it for us and we don't know the conduct the special counsel is examining. with mike flynn jr. but we know he was the right hand man of his father who

so flynn jr.a very close role with his father. >> well, that's the thing, and as you recall during the early phases of this investigation, you know, it was pointed out that flynn jr. was, in fact, working for the transition, a transition spokesperson initially denied that, but it turned out he was actually being paid by the transition to do work with his father. and he is very, very close to his father. i think the interesting dynamic, and kudos again to carol who has broken a lot of these stories over the past few weeks. the interesting dynamic here is it's widely assumed, by the way, with no real reporting behind it, i just read it in a lot of different places, that flynn is either going to be flipped or prosecutors and investigators are attempting to flip flynn in order to get him to testify. i just wonder where his son fits into that picture. they remain very, very close even though trump and associates tried to distance themselves from it. so the interplay between what flynn the elder and fly

mike flynn jr. is himself subject of an investigation by robert mueller. mike flynn's son is not an intelligence professional. his background, reportedly he's got an associates degree in golf course management. but family business is family business, and his dad was certainly an intelligence professional, and mike flynn jr. was reportedly employed by his dad at his dad's consulting company. he served as his dad's chief of staff and he reportedly accompanied his dad on his father's trip to russia in 2015, where he attended the gala anniversary party for russia today, the russia state-run media company and where his dad famously had dinner with vladimir putin and then he led a standing ovation for putin when putin was introduced at the event. mike flynn jr. also appears to have been involved in the effort by a republican donor to contact russian government hackers to try to obtain information on hillary clinton during the campaign. shane harris at the wall street journal obtained an e-mail that that r

did essentially michael flynn jr.me sort of involvement. >> strategically break down why this matters. is this basically an effort to try to tighten the screws on dad so to speak? what's going on here? >> this is a great question because there are a lot of legal experts who believe that part of what robert mueller is trying to do is put pressure on targets of the investigation to cooperate and give up information on bigger targets of the investigation or to learn more. and, you know, it's sort of classic prosecutorial move. when you involve someone's son in this way, it could -- it changes the dynamic a little bit and can really add pressure potentially to someone they may not otherwise consider doing. >> sort of noticeable because a lot of focus on donald trump jr. for his russia meeting many months ago. putting pressure on his own dad. let me ask you about the elder flynn. he's no longer at the white house now. the younger flynn isn't really all that well connected to the president himself. is this something the whi
