and it is inside ford where people remember the stories. so actually the ideas were coming from within the company, asking where they might help. we relay this to the administration, i want to explain that it is a consortium of businesses. in the u.s., general electric, their medical division is working closely with ford and it is such a complicated machine that parts are being subdivided across big supply chains. in the uk, we're working with mclaren. and airbus. prime minister johnson and trying to build ventilators there. so we have to scale this up because the factories as we know them weren't build to produce the volumes we need to make. >> i was going to ask you that. how hard is it to retool your automotive factories to now make ventilators and how quickly can you do this? when might we see the first ventilator coming out of one of your factories? >> the way you need to think about it is like a puzzle. parts will be made at ford, parts made at ge and outside suppliers. and the coordination and speed of that is what we know look a con

earlier today i spoke with bill ford jr., executive chairman at ford. thank you for joining us tonight. ford is one of america's most iconic companies. in this new time and so-called new economy, you announced today that you will be working with 3m and ge to produce medical equipment. >> we'll be helping engineer and design a new ventilator that will be easier to produce in big numbers. with 3m, we're doing res spratd irmasks that are so needed by first spopders and medical workers, and we aim to take their product up from six to ten times what they can currently do. with ourselves, we doing face shields, which we are testing a thousand this week with hospitals in the metro detroit area, and we can gear up to about 100,000 a week very soon. and finally, we are 3d printing n-95 masks as well. because hospitals have great need for that. >> how long before we can expect to see these products out and available to people? >> so we're laying our facilities out with the proper social distancing, and proper protection. but then we're just going to go like hell

how long will it take for ford to engineer this? ford makes cars, right? how are they going to refit factories and so on and will it be quickly enough to meet the demand that we're expecting over the next couple of weeks? >> that is the critical question, jim, and it is really unclear at this point exactly when and how these are going to be distributed. the ford ceo was on our air not too long ago, just talk about that herculean task of just the supply chain that they are dealing with around the world, the tests that need to be run in order to convert some of these auto manufacturing facilities into medical facilities. as you know, medical facilities produce ventilators and respirators, are highly regulated, really complex and they're very different than building a car. now, in terms of the timeline, what this -- the ford ceo did tell us is that because of all of these private sector efforts, there could be hundreds of thousands of ventilators available by mid-may. listen. >> we have to scale this up because the factories as we know them weren't built to p

we have it confirmed from ford and gm. they are closing all factories in north america that include here in the united states as well as canada and mexico through march 30th. after that, i guess, they will go through the cleaning process and then they will take it from there. but this was, as you said, sort of something that was inevitable. here at this ford facility here in chicago it is already closed today because they were experiencing a parts shortage related to the coronavirus. in terms of fiat chrysler, we haven't gotten official confirmation from them they will be doing the same but a source in detroit tells me they will make announcement shortly and it will be in line with what ford and general motors are doing. ford, the president of north america in making this announcement says this, quote in these unprecedented sometimes we're exploring situations to help our customers, workforce, suppliers and communities. he said it there, these are unprecedented teams. in terms of what this means for the companies, they are
