nbc bay area's jessica aguirre rejoins us from forestville. jessica. >> reporter: well, raj and janelle, it is very, very quiet here. minus that he pg&e crew that's feverishly working behind us. it is quiet. most people are indoors. it's too dangerous to be driving around or walking around out here. the water is other deep in some areas. it's one thing to see it from above and ee the expanse of it. it's another thing to walk through it. but what's really surreal is to go on routes where cars go but be in a boat instead. that's exactly what some swift water rescue crews were doing today as they went from forestville into guerneville, looking for people that might need some help or some rescuing. they're on these canoes literally going down roadways where water was halfway through houses and just going -- they basically looked like canals. just a surreal experience for those people. and they had to use those canoes to actually rescue people and bring them to higher ground. as raj mentioned, that water will start to recede. we'll start to see mos

she's in the flooded town of forestville. jessica. >> janelle and raj, i'm in forestville which means i'm basically eight miles from guerneville. guerneville is in that direction. the problem is i can't go in that direction because of all this water. forestville impassable at this point just as guerneville is impenetrable unless you're going by boat. so the people that are in all these houses behind me you see here, they're under a mandatory evacuation order. but they didn't evacuate. a lot of them have chosen to stay behind, which means for why. now, for the next 24 the roadways, you in fact, check this out. this is a big truck with 50 inch wheels, tried to make it through this water, made it about halfway down this road that's on the way to river road, trenton, and then started kind of floating a little bit, had to back out. so if a truck that size can't get through, imagine people in regular cars. let's give you a look at what it looks like from above the air so you can get a grander look at this. this is our drone video w

obviously we can't get into geurneville, still here in forestville. you can see this the town under water. now, remember, the town of geurneville was landlocked yesterday just before 5:00 a.m. so you couldn't go in and out of the area. you had to use a boat or helicopter to get in. that's how they had to get in if they need to rescue anyone. folks had waited too long to evacuate unfortunately stuck right here in forestville. >> they are lucky. up a hill, power hasn't gone out. we're kind of hunkered down. got the tv, fireplace. >> right now i'm smiling because i'm up on the hill. i wasn't smiling yesterday. >> i'm trying to get in and it doesn't look like it's going to happen. >> take you back out here live to river road. you can see the water coming down on this structure as the russian river begins to recede. we know there are about 40 boat rescues yesterday, so we'll see if there's more. sheriff's department saying no additional rescues. in fact, they were saying it was a slow night. images from geurneville, before and after images in the next half

we are along river road here in forestville. gurenville is five or six miles that way and the only way in, once you get past down that road there is by a truck with extremely large wheels or by boat. they wont get there. that will soon change. the russian river crested around 8:00 last night. there was a meeting this morning and they predicted the river will recede below flood stage by 6:00 tonight. some people just aren't waiting and trying to get in and out of the flood zone on their own which is causing problems. it's frustrating for the forestville fire department. firefighters had to deploy the boats to rescue an elderly couple in a suv. the fire department rescued them. they're okay. there's another report of yesterday of a woman that drove past the barricade. the car flooded. she hung toninato a tree until a team assisted her. she is okay. a national guards -- especially any people stuck in gurenville who might need medical assistance. there's been a couple of calls for that. now, first responders rescued 59 people after

(robin) crews have been working to stabilize a landslide at the base of a home perched on top of a san rafael hill. kron4's maureen kelly shows us what's being done to keep the slide from getting worse. here's the 100 foot wide and 300 foot long slide as seen from north san pedro road.....traffic is open underneath the slide but some orange cones are out to warn drivers away from the runoff ponding on the shoulder.the slide is right beneath a home up on crestview way....i've been told by crews working here that home itself has been checked by engineers who have determinted that it's stable.....the slide happened during last week's wet weather and for the past two days a landscape construction company has been doing a lot of work to try and stablize the hillside..take giants sheets of plastic, 6 mm thick 40 x 100 so they're tricky to deal with in the wind and rain had about 15 guys, 500 sandbags about 10,000 feet of rope just saw a star for the top and work your way down methodically a

earlier today kron-4 spoke with a family who lives in nearby forestville... they say even if they wanted to leave, all of the roads leading out of town are closed. "its crazy. i have lived here forever and i've never seen it this bad. both ways to river road are shut down, railroad is shut down, highway 12 is shut down, occidental road is shut down, there's no way out. we went and checked out guerneville road earlier this morning and the cops were stopping people. it's crazy." authorities stopped them in forestville. amy, what's going on? >> reporter: you can't get in, jessica. this is where they stop you. this is on river road in forestville. this is 7 1/2 miles from guerneville. they tell me that there's a dip in river road as you head toward guerneville. they're worried that will flood. you won't be able to get back. they want us to stay out here. check out the flooding we found. look at the cars that are stuck in the standing water. we're on mira bell at river road. flooding right here. we're not even to guerneville. we started evacuating guerneville. people started protecting their things. they packed up businesses and homes. getting their belongings up to higher ground before they, themselves got out of the area. they have the gift of time. but it is expected to be devastating. they are predicting that the river will rise to 46 feet by tonight. >> telling everyone that for your own safety, your life is at risk. you need to leave this area. it's going to be extremely dangerous tomorrow. these roads will be impassa

we tried to get to guerneville but ended up in forestville. we are at the old river road and maribel road, as far as we could get up the river because the cars are completely submerged. this is supposed to be a dirt lot. you can see the water level covering half of this van and was covering one third when we arrived as things continue to get worse. the river will rise up to 46 feet by 11 pm tonight and staying above but stage for a full 24 hours before receding below 32 feet friday night. the mudslides is a major concern due to the saturated ground. someone was trying to help their neighbor stay safe >> it was a debate about how to get everybody else out with me. they did not want to go. >> reporter: emergency response personnel are specifically keeping and i on the burned areas from the tubbs fire and nuns fi come down due to that drenched in unstable ground. this is another reason why sonoma county officials are asking people to evacuate, or at the very least to stay off the roads. we can assume these people have moved their cars up on the s

we are live in forestville. >>> some incredible images. sky drone 5 saw people getting around in kayaks and canoes. >>> this massive landslide in napa. the hillside no match for the relentless rain. the slide has blocked off the 3,500 block of redwood road indefinitely. >> reporter: the slide started about 60 feet above redwood road where you see that structure brought down by the force of the landslide. it also goes about 80 feet wide this way and brought down a number of trees and mud with it. tonight a hillside gave way in napa. piles of mud, rock, and trees tumbling down to redwood road. >> this just looks like this hillside got oversaturated. we'll have to look at whether there are any human c as well. >> reporter: the street will be shut down at least into the morning. rescuers patrolled by boat in search of those standing their ground, refusing to evacuate until there is no ground left to stand on. this man, surrounded by water, and suffering from hypothermia by the time firefighters got to him tonight. >> they think they can stay i

let's go live to jackie ward monitoring the russian river at forestville. days and what are the conditions today compared to yesterday? >> reporter: we drove past the road closure because news crews are allowed a little bit further up than the normal residence in the area. the flooding is so much worse and you can barely see the road, only a quarter left. we are in forestville right now about a half-mile from the farmhouse at waller road, 10 miles southeast of guerneville. this is some of the damage we have come across driving on river road. if you want to get anywhere close to guerneville that would take you almost an hour and a half with parts of river road that look like a leak. yet to go up to hillsboro, use west side or sweetwater springs road but even that is difficult with the water levels above or tv above flood stage. the water crested last night but a flood warning has been extended until this morning for those near healdsburg. some are hoping the worst is behind them. >> we are on the sunridge avenue in forest hill. this is one of the first place

just a few minutes ago, i met one man who lives in forestville. he says he lives in a house up the hill but has been stuck there for two days. the water receded just enough this morning where he was able to drive down for the first time. here's what he had to say. >> i was driving really slow. you don't know what's under that water. if the road's even there. so i was just coming out to see if my wife could make it to work. but yeah, i mean, i would tell people to be very cautious still. i mean, it's still a really dangerous situation. >> another interesting thing we have seen this morning is a family of wild pigs. they have been running up and down river road and have even been seen entering the water. so that's something that's just been a little different out here this morning. officials are telling people who have not yet evacuated to stay in place. and again, the water is receding. firefighters say that it's definitly gone down significantly. definitely gone down significantly. just up the road there's an rv park and campground. it's a big mes
