duty station with an eye toward i don't want to go back to that place so chose the duty station, fort hoodxas which wasn't sending troops to afghanistan. it was sending troops to iraq for a diskind of war, but -- different kind of war and then the afghan surge happened and the armi' dash new unit at fort hood went to the same valley and he wound up there in the valley 16 months after he left and this was a devastating experience. his presence was helpful to soldiers in his unit but a he didn't have the same learning curve they did. heed been there before. but it was horrible. he wound up being on a helicopter out for his mid-tour leave on the second deployment that was shot down and he survived the shootdown, and essentially during his mid-tour leave the army judged him unfit to go back, and the intervening years for him have been a lot of ups and very serious downs as he struggled with the things the went through in the valley and he struggled with on substance abuse and all things. he is a fairly unique story but the war has certainly damaged a lot of lives very seriously. now, there are
