there was some political jockeying going on about closing the fort, fort mcclellan. the senator from that state had enough political pull to move one company of trainees down there just enough to keep the fort open. >> what kind of basic training did you receive? >> basic combat training. >> we just call it basic training. a rudimentary training for conversion from civilian to military army. how long was it? >> 8 weeks. >> were you paid? >> i did not receive any pay while i was in basic training due to a loss of my records. the transfer from south carolina to alabama, they missed placed several of our records. it was a political thing. they did it rapidly. somehow our records became separated. we completed basic training in may and we were given a 21 day leave, they call it delay en route. my first assignment out of basic training was in germany. post-world war ii germany. >> so, did you go to germany? >> yes. >> where were you in germany? >> i was stationed at an army camp in friedberg. there i remain for the next three years. >> you were there until 1951? >> 1950.

the dogwoods were blooming, and the people all know each other this, and it is within a mile of the fortragg base, itself. >> but there was something amiss at the home of the eastburn family. >> the neighbors noticed that the newspapers in the drive way were piling up, and they knew that the husband was out of town. so that naturally raised curiosity. they went and peeked in the window and a heard the baby crying, and then he called the authorities. >> i received the call from the dispatch of a homicide on the somerville road. when i got there, there was one deputy who had been in the building. his eyes teared up and he had his hat down and shaking his head and he said, i don't understand this. >> the baby was taken to safety, and detective bittle and his partner entered the house. >> as we went down the hallway, we looked this the bedroom to the left-hand side, and the daughter who was in the first grade was still in bed and had a star wars blanket pulled up around her head. she was stabbed ten times. you could see the stab wounds through the blanket. we went further to the master bedro

the war department called it fort sedgwick and its residents called it fort hell. it was within a few hundred yards, 200 or 300 yards of the confederate lines, open to snipers, mortars, artillery 24 hours a day throughout this siege, which basically took nine months. basically the first instance of french warfare that their -- french -- trench warfare that their grandsons would be fighting to the 50 years in the future. this is the fort threw which the commissioners passed as they came across the siege line. there were 50,000, give or take, confederate troops in the army of northern virginia, most of of them ragged, hungry, a great many of them barefoot in weather like what we're seeing today for a period of months. most of them hanging on by sheer determination and willpower. the union army had more than twice as many troops, over 100,000 men, well fed, beautifully equipped, it's very well armed. this man is sitting on boxes and boxes of flour. this overwhelming army had failed to dislodge lee and his men from his decision. they have conducted this trench warfare

it was right off the runway of the tipton airfield here in the fort meade area. but, again, they had to get in there to get to to that wreckage very quickly. fortunately, they have specialized teams that respond to these sorts of incidents. they got social security tans from prince george's county and other counties. they brought in equipment as well as suvs. you need the four-wheel drive vehicles. they brought in the four-wheel drive vehicles and gators. they got the heavy equip got to the victims and got them off to the hospital. again, they are going to survive this horrible crash. chris, back to you. >> great work darcy. investigators have not released the names of the people on board. we did some digging and learned who that ps registered to. records show it is thomas lighten cline. he owns the aa 1 aircraft. that he lives in silver spring. we first told you about the crash with an alert on our nbc washington app. you can download it for updates and stay with us as we continue to cover ts story. once we get the identities of those injured in the crash, we're

and he was the first person to lease up all of that land in the 1950s, north of the fort worth. over what we now know is the barnett shale. but one of the amazing things was that fracking had just come into -- i talk about the modern fracking, hydrafracking starts right after world war ii, this is a brand-new technology, taking water, they used toed a napalm to it to slicken it. he actually fracked wells, early, very small fracs, so he would do that, and he starts making good wells, the first ten wells he drills were good, so for 30e years, he is drilling up north of fort worth, every time he drills down a little deeper, he goes through this rock called the barnett shale and his instruments show him, there's gas here, but it's incredibly thick, and from 1982 on, he basically runs an experiment, he would drill a few wells a year into the barnett shale and try fracking them, and failure was okay. that's what he told his people, you're allowed to fail on a small number of wells, and they kept doing it. talk about persistence, for what is that, almost 20 years, they kept drilling an
