nbc's jay gray live in foxborough, mass, following the controversy and the excitement leading up to the big game. jay? >> reporter: good morning, aaron. yeah, game day finally here. i don't know where the rest of the fans are, but never too early to start with the tailgate party. we'll have breakfast brats and burgers out here. it is game day and a lot of people are hoping that now the focus will return to the field. there has been a controversy over deflategate and now more questions about spygate and any other gate that keeps action away from what the league and the teams want you to see which is of course their product on the field. it should be a raucous start to the season tonight. one thing that can play a part -- the weather. it's beautiful right now, but we do expect rain to start later on today and continue according to forecasters through kickoff and throughout the game. won't wash away the party. the patriots released their banner. one who won't be in the stands -- nfl commissioner roger goodell. he is the first time as commissioner not attending the first game of the season

i guarantee you if there's a bad smell in the locker room at foxborough teams will come forward and sayatriots. they did something to make the locker room smell which upset us. everything the patriots do or don't do will be used as evidence to say this is a cheating franchise. that is bad for the nfl because there's always been the equivalent of, we could call it the thin blue line where you don't speak about other nfl teams. yet that thin blue line is now completely shredded. nfl teams are speaking out. sometimes anonymously or as you saw last night with the steelers hope mike tomlin, absolutely publicly and saying that shenanigans are going on and patriots are habitual line steppers to quote charlie murphy and it has to stop and stop now. that's bad for the league. it's also bad because it's emotionally exhausting for fans. think about it. we haven't even gotten through week one of the nfl season yet. we've only had one game. and already it's like there's this heaviness about like is the league legitimate. what are the patriots doing. >> nothing is wrong and we have tom brady back on
