my representative here, virginia foxx, she is a multimillionaire.what do these people have in common with me living on $32,000 a year, working, paying taxes out the wazoo. $4000 in federal and state taxes last year. some of these people in power act like we don't pay taxes. i just find it so interesting. what do they have in common with me? guest: well, on the other hand, as the government has grown, part of the reason why you see some much money in politics and so much lobbying is because the government is so large and doles out so much money that the stakes are very high. lobbying has grown enormous the as an industry. ist that means is that it lucrative to become a lawmaker because after you retire you become a lobbyist and you lobby your former colleagues. people who want to become rich have a reason to come to washington and stay here. in the old model you are basically a citizens legislator who would come from some small town and stay here for a few years and then go back home and resume a normal life in your neighborhood and work normal jobs.
