let's bring in republican congressman francis rooney of florida.vice chairman of the foreign affairs committee. it's good to see you again. thank you for joining me. right off the bat, how concerned are you that rudy giuliani or anyone within the administration would specifically comment on the three americans detained in north korea before any formal announcement is made? >> well, i'm concerned about several things that mr. giuliani said the other day. particularly in the situation of hostage situations, it's better to be quiet in particular to what's going on behind the scenes. >> do you want to articulate the other things you had concerns about? >> i think you were just talking about some of them. >> okay. then we'll stay on this topic. okay. i'm curious of your understanding of how close we are to getting freedom for these three detained americans. >> i don't know. i haven't heard anything. we're out of session this week. i'll probably get some pretty good afternoon in monday afternoon, unless they get released sooner. one thing about it, the p

joining me now as we wait, republican congressman francis rooney.e time. >> jim, thanks for having me on. >> as you well know, being a congressman from florida in the wake of that horrible parkland shooting, you proposed new gun safety laws, which included mazing the minimum age to buy rifles. the president expressed support for some of those safety measure but we haven't heard a lot of that from the president. why do you think he's abandoned those calls for change? >> i hope he hasn't abandoned them. he did say very positive things about gun violence reform, after florida took some fairly courageous measures and then he went silent. we need to make sure that unstable people can't get guns, that background groups are pursued vigorously and some of these loopholes are plugged. >> i don't want to say you're a lone republican but you're not surrounded by your caucus colleagues on these issues. is there enough support for measures along those lines? >> i think there would be enough support if you looked at it from a bipartisan point of view but there ar

cheryl: here to react with all the back and forth, florida congressman francis rooney, member of theuse foreign affairs committee. congressman, thank you for being here. we have to get your reaction to all the back and forth this last 24 hours. it is on, it is off, it is maybe. what do you say? >> i think the on and off posture something probably not a bad idea to set the stage for better talks. this president has done a pretty good job getting china and north korea in a better spot than any of his predecessors has been able to do. so just remains to be seen if we can avoid the historical american desire to get a deal done at any cost and remain disciplined. >> congressman, you brought up the issue of china, i have to bring that up as well of the timing of all this seems a little suspect. kim jong-un met with president xi. right after that meeting, kim jong-un's rhetoric, north korean rhetoric turned negative for us, insults were flying in, mike pence for instance. all of sudden we back out and a deal for zte, and that is china's, big, i'm sorry, big piece on the chessboard. trump sa
