that's of san francisco. that's a grant funded program where they go in to pressure washing around the garbage cans. i mentioned that before. so 2800 garbage cans each one gets power wash steam cleaned at least once a month, some of them more and then they'll also go and pick up around the cans any loose debris that's there and they're also our eyes. so if they see that a door is missing or locks broken or there's graffiti on the can, they'll let us know about that so we can send our crews to go out and maintain them. it's been really good program. i think anyone who's walked down the street after a garbage can has been steam clean even before. you're very thankful to see that happening. >> people will throw, you know, half a can of cola in a garbage can or part of a cup of coffee or you're pet waste or whatever. >> it can start to seep out and we want to make sure that those garbage cans are clean so it's not just a garbage can but also the sidewalk around that. >> okay, here's the fun part new garbage cans.

as a san francisco l.b. contractor we are able to provide opportunities for sfb trade partners and subcontract commitments. this entails opportunities for local workforce that creates community empowerment. so for example two of our affordable housing, housing construction blocks and sundials are a combined approximate $100 million gmp. and so with those dollars we're about 30% of contract dollars going to lbe east 33% going to local san francisco workforce and about 8% of priority zip code san francisco local workforce the same and a half point shipyard that's a combined blocks two blocks approximately 90 million dp gmp dollars above 20% of subcontract dollars going to lbj is 14% of par a priority zip codes going to san francisco local workforce 36% of local san francisco workforce. so these are really good numbers. these are dollars going right back into the community. >> simple fact as a gec we've been able to sit at the table a larger gcs and cut some of these deals and continued to filter money down to

born and raised in san francisco. cable car equipment, technically i'm a transit operator of 135 and work at the cable car (indiscernible) and been here for 22 years now. i grew up around here when i was a little can i. my mom used to hang in china town with her friends and i would get bored and they would shove me out of the door, go play and find something to do. i ended up wandering down here when i was a kid and found these things. ♪ [ music ] ♪ ♪ >> fascinated by them and i wanted to be a cable car equipment from the time i was a little kid. i started with the emergency at the end of 1988 and drove a bus for a year and a half and i got lucky with my timing and got here at cable car and at that time, it really took about an average five to maybe seven years on a bus before you could build up your seniority to come over here. basically, this is the 1890s verse ever a bus. this is your basic public transportation and at the time at its height, 1893, there were 20 different routes ask this powerhouse, there -- and th

we're in san francisco, right? this tech stuff is happening, but we have computer issues. >> computer issues are far from the only problem with san francisco police's aging fleet of vehicles. sfpd tells me out of 357 marked vehicles, 57 are out for service or in need of repair. but the police union says that number is much higher. through multiple sources, i obtained images from most of the city's ten police stations illustrating the poor conditions of some cruisers. this whiteboard from park station shows seven cars in need of repair, everything from broken seatbelts to windows. another five are out of service entirely. one even reading, no computer, no siren, and much more. at another station, the board lists 12 vehicles with problems. one reportedly died while driving scrawled at the top. why is everything broken? >> you're just, i don't know, a brake pad away from something happening, right? because of the maintenance. >> with so many unusable vehicles, multiple sources told me officers are sometimes unable to

these are anomalous in san francisco generally most of san francisco is much smaller sites and so it is unique to have sites of significant size in the center of the city adjacent to public transit these being sort of light industrial parcels or are the reason why they are that size and one of the the features of the rezoning was to recognize the uniqueness of these large sites and to create a process where these sites could have a sort of a more bespoke consideration in terms of design and accommodations made to accommodate the kind of densities and so forth that were envisioned in exchange for certain on site what were called qualified amenities which qualified these sites for various exceptions to the planning code and other consideration by the planning commission and some of these and these qualified amenities were included land dedication on the sites for 100% affordable housing public open space, other community facilities and public realm improvements above and beyond what projects otherwise were required to do and so these sites all were entitled with these various amenities

there were no sideshows in the city of san francisco. however, there were there was a sideshow about 230 in the morning on the bay bridge. that was handled by chp with the assistance of one of our officers a cpd officers. but it was a busy night around the bay area at 9:30 p.m.. we were advised by it outside police department that sideshows were occurring outside of san francisco. and we started our coordination with many agencies including the california highway patrol. at that point we were advised that a small group of cars were actively involved in the sideshow and they went across the bridge bay bridge headed toward the city. the group was basically disrupted by the california highway patrol and they actually turned around and went back east. >> as a result of what we thought would be a busy night with sideshow activity, our not driving response unit was activated. that unit reported scouting cars throughout the night. and basically our strategy was to get to the hotspots and prevent these events from happening before they could set

in san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. there's a new member of san francisco's leadership team. mayor daniel lurie today swore in former u.s. attorney wilson liang to fill a seat in the police commission. the board of supervisors confirmed liang for the post on tuesday. the board also removed former commissioner max carter this week. mayor lori says he is confident leon will help make san francisco safer. wilson is extremely qualified for this role with 14 years as a federal prosecutor and his private sector experience. he has the expertise to help our police department keep people safe. the mayor also announced he's appointing gun violence prevention advocate maddie scott to the police commission. identity theft can be very destructive. now, one bay area police department is providing support for people whose identities have been stolen. today, san jose police launched an online tool. it will connect identity theft victims with a counselor through the san jose police website. that counselor can offer support and guidance

get around san francisco and oakland relatively easily. bart and san francisco muni are key parts of that success, but both agencies say they are headed for dire financial straits, and a number of systems are facing what we tend to call a fiscal cliff, which is, if there's not additional funding found quickly, they're going to have to cut their services. bart says its trains set a post-pandemic record for weekend ridership during the all star and chinese new year weekend, with nearly 140,000 fares during the workweek. ridership is also rebounding. yesterday, more than 191,000 riders were on bart, but that's still far short of pre-pandemic levels of about 400,000 riders a day. and unlike public transit in other states, bart is not regularly subsidized by state funding. 70% of its budget is from fares, and so bart has estimated that if we don't figure something out that starting in 2026, they're going to have to make very difficult decisions to close stations, decrease service, lay off employees. the san francisco mta has already started cur
