. >> cbs news contributor and republican strategist frank luntz is in los angeles. good morning.i asked andy card, where is all this going? >> it's a i've been doing focus groups in the last two weeks and there are a significant number of republicans that will be furious at a member of congress or senator that doesn't support donald trump if they themselves are because they will consider that to be disloyal and they'll consider that to be in essence pro-washington. there's another group that is equally as important that are concerned about donald trump and would feel that an endorsement of him is actually not what they're looking for. for the gop to be successful in november, they have to walk that narrow tight rope between turning on conservatives and appealing to independents. i have to tell you, charlie, in all the time i've been doing this, which is now almost 30 years, i've never seen anything like it. the gop has never had this challenge at a time when hillary clinton, a democratic presumptive nominee, is weaker than any democratic nominee in the last 50 years. >> what abou

point for me was the night of the first fox debate when trump had a collision with megyn kelly and frank luntzid this focus group and they all said trump had lost and everybody in the mainstream media got together and said trump watched. and then you watched on facebook and google and twitter. and trump was winning by 65 or 70%. there is something out here happening with the american people that none of the folks in the elet get. >> do you know what i think part of it is? that everything is pretty much just fine for the media they all have jobs. we all feed off this stuff. but for the american people, if you actually go out and talk to the american people, things aren't so fine. their wages are stagnant. things aren't great. nobody ever bothered to go out and talk to them when i start talking to people of every background you find whether you are african-american or latino or asian american, whether you are a millennial there is sense of anxiety what's coming next and what's going to happen. i think trump intuitive of that, really communicated it appeared he -- if you notice, he has been gaini

frank luntz did this focus group where everybody said he lost. then as i watched the numbers that night on facebook, on google, and on twitter, by 65% to 70%, people said trump won. and so i'm sitting there just as an observer saying, wait a second, something very profound is going on. if he is sending a signal that nobody in the elite gets, but 2/3 of the republican voters get, and so from that point on, i began trying to understand what does he do, how does he do it? it's on a very simple principle. if i watch aaron rodgers as a quarterback, i figure it's my job to understand him. he doesn't need to ask me about being quarterback. if i watch tiger woods as a golfer, it's my job to watch him. it's not his job to ask me about golf. well here you've got a guy who, as he said with his usual immodest style, he will have -- he will have more votes than any republican in history in the primaries. now, at some level you got to stop and say, gosh, he's something right. >> but then why -- there's this mysterious -- you're right. i would think the republi
