. >> anne i'm frank somerville. in san jose police tonight are reveal ago spike in the city's crime rate. matt keller is live where officers are on high alert heading into the weekend. >> reporter: new statistics released to me today reveal an alarming increase in crime. >> san jose. officers are concerned it's only going to get worse. 2012 was one of the most violent years in san jose reaching a 20 year high in homicides. police released new numbers revealing total crime increased by 27%. >> is this unique to the city? >> reporter: in 2012 homicides increased by 15.4%. rape up 23.9%. robbery was 9.7%. >> the number of aggravated assaults you're looking at 150 to 200 more in 2012 than we had in 2011. anyone one could have resulted in a homicide. >> reporter: the biggest increases were in property crimes. burglaries increased 23.3% and vehicle theft increased 71%. this year san jose is on pace for about 1000 car thefts a month. >> they took away my honda civic. and they stole everything that i had in there. >> report

good evening everyone, i'm frank somerville. >> i'm gasia mikaelian. freed in just the past hour. a man who was locked up for years is no longer behind bars tonight. paul chambers is live with what led to this. >> reporter: in the last hour, a man was able to walk free past these bars for a crime he never committed. here he is a happy free man. >> there's a lot of the weight came off of my shoulders. so i feel blessed for the judge to decide it. because one time i was thinking that the judge was you know just being hateful toward me. >> reporter: back in 2006, the now 51-year-old ross was convicted murder and assault for a firearm which he was sentenced for 25 years behind bars. today a judge ordered ross to be released after new evidence showed he was innocent. >> it makes no sense that mr. ross committed this crime. there's no physical evidence. it just didn't catch up. >> reporter: outside we spoke to one of ross's alibis, ross's 77-year-old mom who said he could not have committed the crime because he was at home with her at the time. ross's mother says she was in constant pra

i'm frank somerville. >> i'm julie haener. a major law enforcement action is underway at this hour in east oakland. we're told it involves a homicide case and the fbi is involved. we get this developing news now from ktvu's amber lee. she is live near 88th and birch. >> reporter: it is a very active scene out here. i can hear the helicopters buzzing above me, and in less than half an hour ago, we heard a loud bang go off, down the street. an officer told me, officers fired bean bags against the door of a home as a warning. as you can see, a police tactical van is lit up. it appears s.w.a.t. team members are strategizing. >> reporter: we learned this operation started at 4:00 this afternoon and police are searching a home. alameda county sheriff's bomb squad, and a highway patrol serving a search warrant. officers set up a perimeter that stretches for several blocks. one woman nearby told us her 16- year-old son is among a dozen people detained by police for a homicide that took place a few days ago. she questions why police di

good evening, i'm frank somerville. >> i'm julie haener. we have information about a teenage boy who was fatally stabbed during a fight outside san jose high school. a charter school, and alternative school. >> reporter: we have new details to pass on. in just the last hour, we learned more about the victim, including his name. some identified the teenager as anthony santa cruz, a junior here who played football. the coach says santa cruz was 16, or 17 years old, a father with a 2-year-old son, who toll him, he was trying to leave his gang ties behind. crime scene investigators are working into the night, after a teenager was stabbed and killed. police got a call around 3:15 this afternoon, and responded to north 21st street, where they found the boy. >> the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. currently, we don't have any motive. we don't have any suspects in custody. >> reporter: news chopper 2 was overhead. grief-stricken family members broke down. this man ran through the police tape, saying he was the brother of the victim. >>
