fred goes to italy. there are diary entries -- this surfaced at auction just a couple of years ago from the davis family members, i believe. it was auctioned off and the museum bought it. it is winnie's entries about the trip with fred. i got a memoir from fred's family. these are exciting for any writer or historian. they explain different things but it is inexplicable to me that the daughter of the confederacy and everson davis would be allowed to go on chaperoned to italy with her fiancÉ. many times they were alone. joseph and kate were the worst chaperones ever. john vause and fred pleitgen. fred, 10:45 at night in gaza city.eports of a rocket being launched from gaza? >> reporter: well, brooke, i was here at our position earlier before about an hour ago. we did hear something outgoing that could have been a rocket being launched towards israel from gaza. and it was indeed only a couple moments later that the israeli defense forces came out and said that, yes, a rocket had been launched, and as you said, the rocket impacted in the huff ashkalon area, south of israel and close to the border with gaza. there have been several reports since then, some of them claiming that up to two to three rockets had been fired here from gaza. the israel defense forces at this point in time are only confirming that one rocket was indeed shot across toward their area. there is also other reports that we have seen come out that possibly there's already been some retaliation by the israelis, the israelis not confirming that, saying they have no reports of any explosions inside northern gaza or that the forces had conducted an

fred? >> reporter: it is a disappointment. a lot of people on the ground in gaza and israel were looking for something more longer term. there was a lot of confusion last night as the deadline loomed. there were talks of a cease-fire agreement, a longer term one signed, then the israeli side put the brakes on that and said nothing had been signed. the talks were falling apart. in the end, a 24-hour extension that isn't anything that would make anybody here on the ground happy. the good thing is the fighting is not resuming. there was one senior hamas official who came out and said, in effect, nothing had been achieved so far. the two sides were far apart. every minute of this 24-hour period that started at midnight last night gaza time, every single minute would have to be used to hammer out an agreement. a lot of underlying issues remain unresolved. the status of the border crossing, more goods would be allowed in. more people allowed in and out. israel has security concerns with that. benjamin netanyahu came out and said the
