let's begin with fred pleitgen tonight in kyiv and fred, what are you seeing on the ground tonight? >> hi there, erin, certainly doesn't seem to us as though the situation here is deescalating, in fact were two missile strikes pretty close to the center of kyiv, it's unclear what exactly was hit in those missile strikes or whether they were successful, certainly have heard a lot of air raid sirens here tonight and antimissile defense activated as well. so in any case, certainly appears and you can see the video there that plume of smoke so clearly something was hit, unclear whether the russians actually hit the target they wanted to hit but there are attacks on the capitol city that are on going. so there is certainly not any sort of deesqcalation, at the same time, in the area northwest of kyiv earlier today and ukrainian forces had managed to beat some of the russian forces back and they seemed quite confident they're going to be able to continue doing that. the big question there is whether or not russian forces are actually pulling back or whether or not they're pulling back at

good to have you here, fred.and it does seem a very basic point if you're looking for an economic partner, would you rather have russia or the west right now? >> so isn't that a simple decision for china? well, there's some truth to what the president is saying and this isn't just the west. china is worried about its economic relationships around the world, but the question is more complicated than this . china has other agendas. china would like to replace the dollar as the world's global currency, the reserve currency. it would like to reduce u.s. influence and basically have a system of reasonable spheres of influence and it would like to exploit the situation for cheap energy buys and to replace western firms that have left russia. so there's some truth in what biden is saying, but at the end of the day, china will make its own decisions. i don't think the u.s. is going to pressure in one way or another. >> they seem very good. the chinese, fred, at playing one the long game and also playing both sides. are t

fred, i'm going to start with you. even in spite of russian bombardment, fred, ukrainians are gaining groundout pz outsidf kyiv. >> there's been intense shelling and explosions going on especially toward the north of kyiv, toward the northwest and northeast of kyiv. there you can see the uranians are increasingly firing at russian positions not just with artillery but rocket artillery as well. clearly a large operation that's been going on there. and the ukrainians aren't really talking much about it. the gains they're making there, they believe those gains are still quite fragile, and also they believe if they provide too much information they might tip off the russians as to what exactly their strategy is up there. we have heard from the local authorities here, for instance, one of those districts under russian control in the northwest or towards the northwest of kyiv, that's now 80% back under the control of ukrainians. the ukrainian national police went back in there. they're burking there again. they do say it's u

fred, i'll start with you. i know you have been hearing air raid sirens tonight in kyiv as heavy fighting has been reported around ukraine's capital. what is the latest? >> reporter: well, first of all, don, it was a very active day in the ukrainian capital. we did have the air raid sirens that went off not just tonight but really throughout the entire course of the day. the other thing we've heard is some machine gun battles not necessarily something that we would hear in that intensity on other days. there are no regular days here in the ukrainian capital but this was certainly something we felt things were even more intense. we did get the news there have been pretty heavy battles going on in the outskirts of kyiv. and i think one of the things that is important for our viewers to understand is that the front lines here around kyiv are pretty complex. you have some toward the northwest of the capital where you just showed the drone footage that is so horrifying and yet so remarkable from the erpin district w

cnn cannot independently confirm that, with that to correspondent starting with fred pleitgen in kyivgeneral saying the first phase of the war is over, does that match what you've seen in kyiv, in your opinion, a purposeful change in goal post or just a change in public messaging? >> reporter: well, no, certainly it seems to us the russians are on the back foot, especially here in kyiv. you know, some of the things you're hearing from that russian general, i mean clearly, in the early days of the war, you know, when, for instance, i was in belgorad on the russian side of the border were certainly saying they wanted to take kharkiv on the other side of the border, at the beginning said they already penetrated the first defense of kharkiv, also sent a bunch of troops to get to the center of kyiv obviously then repelled by the ukrainian military so certainly seems as though from our vantage point here and also what the ukrainians are saying as well is that the russians simply haven't achieved a lot of the aims they have and seem to be retrospectively trying to move the goal post, if you

weeks of attacks have devastated mariupol, fred. mayor there saying that the city is quote, in the hands of the occupiers. what could you tell us about that? what is latest? >> yeah, that is a devastating situation of course, awful for the people that are still stuck inside of that city. it is not 100% clear whether he meant that all of the city has been taken by russian forces or whether or not fighting is still going on there. whether or not the defenders of that city are still holding pockets of it. he does say that not everything is under their control and said that the civilians still inside of the city need to be evacuated as fast as possible. with some of the reports that we've been getting from that place, the fact that there is shelling all of the time pretty much constantly and large parts of the city have been destroyed and a lot of civilians have already been killed. i think one of the figures that i saw was around 5,000 civilians have been killed in that city alone. and then you have the fact of the people on the the gr

i want to start with fred pleitgen outfront live in kyiv. fred, i just showed everyone some of the video that you filmed when you went north of kyiv. it was amazing, right? you saw in the streets complete and utter rubble. those giant -- pothole wouldn't be the right word. those are complete holes and destroyed what used to be city streets. what more -- that's what i'm referring to right there. what more are you seeing on the ground tonight? >> reporter: well, i think that was emblematic of what we saw there in that suburb, which is to the north of kyiv. we're still seeing some of those pictures now. what you're seeing now is a house that got hit by an artillery shell or rocket and several people were wounded in that house and a 2-year-old child was actually killed. that's something that unfortunately is all too common in those areas, especially toward the north of kyiv and to the northwest of kyiv as well. the place that we were at yesterday is actually now been declared one of the most dangerous places around the capital of kyiv. at the sa

fred, what can you tell us about recovery efforts? >> well, they're certainly difficult in mariupol. as you pointed out, this strike on this art school took place in the early hours of today and the authorities believe some 400 people had taken shelter in that building. but it's important for our viewers to point out that the reason why the authorities really can't give us any exact figures on how many casualties there might be, how many people might still be trapped is because the authorities themselves are under constant fire from russian artillery, from russian rockets as well in mariupol. this a city under siege. it's been surrounded for a very long time. and one of the things the authorities on the ground told us is they say there's basically no emergency services anymore that could actually dig for people there. there's local officials who come dig with their own hands and local people as well. and so, therefore, it's very difficult to get any sort of exact information. now, of course, as you pointed out, this comes just days af

fred talked about trust towards russia on the ground. i think it applies towards the talks and the international community. russia stated it would see a significant pullback around kyiv and the northern city of chernihiv met with widespread skepticism from the international community. u.s. president biden saying basically, he'll believe it when he sees it. he is going to look for actions rather and that words. volodymyr zelenskyy himself saying in a statement on social media last night that those kind of statements don't drown out the explosions of russian bombs, that the situation on the ground is still very difficult. he is still calling on the west to ramp up military aid to ukraine. so this is clearly a sign that there were progress, that they moved further than before. but there is a significant lack of trust toward russia. people are waiting to see what happens next. as fred pointed out, there are concerns that this is not so much a pullback, but a reorganization. perhaps a sign that troops, as the pentagon pointed out yesterday, a

so, fred, what is happening where you are right now?hear the ukrainian president, volodymyr zelenskyy, speak there to those nato leaders today, and talk about the fact that he believes that he needs just 1% of the nato -- the money they're spending on arms to basically tackle the russian military, that is, that's in this country right now. but right now, from what i can tell you, victor, there is a massive battle going on around kyiv as we speak. we're hearing a lot of outgoing artillery, which is obviously coming from the ukrainian side. today, we had a massive fire fight that was going on as well for an extended period of time so as you can see, a lot of these pleas that are coming from the ukrainian president, from volodymyr zelenskyy, they are due to the fact that they are obviously confronted with this massive russian force here around the ukrainian capital, but of course, then, also in other places in ukraine as well. and the ukrainians are saying, look, we've been able to keep these forces at bay, but they're also, of course, the

fred pleitgen is in kyiv and ben wedeman in mykolaiv. good evening. fred, i'll start with you. russia says they are scaling back near kyiv. the u.s. is saying don't be fooled by russia's claims. tonight we are hearing air raid sirens and artillery and rocket fire. give us the situation, please. >> reporter: yeah. we've had a full on artillery battle going on here for the better part of the evening, don. you know, we've heard multiple rocket launchers going on, thuds pretty much the entire evening as well. that is something that really has happened during the day also. this went on pretty much for i would say since we got up early this morning. so it certainly seems as though there is a violent battle going on. one thing we did is when we heard the russians announce they were going to scale back some forces around the kyiv area we actually went to the area close to the front line where a lot of those battles were going on. the civilians there said they didn't believe a word of it. they said they believe if the russians do withdraw that it would be only because they simply can't

we have been hearing some sounds behind you, fred. i wonder if you can describe. i know at times you've seen rocket fire over your head, planes as well. what are you hearing right now? >> reporter: well, right now what we're hearing is sort of jets circling overhead. we have been hearing that the entire time, almost we have been here, here for about four or five hours i would say. there has been pretty much constant jet activity going on by the russian air force. and, again, right now it slowed down a little bit, but even as we were on air, we have been hearing thuds in the background of what could either be artillery or rocket artillery, very difficult to tell on a day like this because of the overcast, because of the weather. but it is something that certainly is a constant. one other thing i wanted to mention to you, jim, as well, we are also still seeing a lot of resupply convoys going behind me towards the area of kharkiv as well. so it certainly does seem like the russians also are replenishing the forces they have as well. jim? >> and that's been a challeng

>> i had a smile when fred mentioned the clear sky exercises. that's really a partnership, allied partner exercise that's conducted by the air forces in europe at ramstein. they not only teach air to air combat, fighter jets, the top gun kind of thing we've seen in movies, but they also teach the pilots how to draw enemy aircraft into defensive zones. ground area defensive zones. so the shoot downs of many of the russian planes have been not only the air to air, but i would say primarily the ground-to-air fights. this is the coordination between the ground and the air and this is not what we, it's what we haven't seen on the russian side. those clear sky exercises are complimented by other exercises that u.s. army does called rapid try dent where you use your partnership with ukrainians and other allies and partners to talk about how you conduct large scale operations, bigger scale operations. things that the russians have not done. probably have not done in the last 25 years. those are critically important. it's the training. the leadership. it
