he has chosen frederick douglass as his nominee. he is taking questions here on american history tv. >> jackson's interest. douglass got interested in the racial sciences of the years because they were such scientific clouds hanging over his people. he read everything he could find in the field that was then called ethnology. he wrote a brilliant, actually lecture that he gave at a college in 1856. essentially taking to pieces the arguments, the biological arguments of the racial sciences. the races were born with different capacities and different shapes and sizes of heads and abilities. some born to labor. et cetera. he spent his life, at times, i think, disgusted and even bored with the constant reference to race. as you may know, when he his wife anna died, he met anna, a free black woman in baltimore when he was a teenager. turns out they had grown up three miles from each other on the eastern shore. they knew common families together. they probably played at the same mill as children and didn't even know it. she died in 1882,

she walked up to him and said, frederick, i'm your sister eliza. how you doing? i named my first son for you. he had a large extended family. black and white. and he spent a good deal of energy just trying to figure that out. it makes him in some ways a prototype of thousands if not millions of other americans who either seek to discover the multiracial character of their families and their past or who find out about it when someone tells them. yes, sir? >> did lincoln and douglas meet? yes. >> and i'd be interested, what was lincoln's impressing? what did lincoln state or say about douglass? >> well, yes, they met. they met three times, almost a fourth. to make a long story short, the first is in august of 1863 at the white house. not by invitation. douglass kind of forced his way in on first visit. he went to washington. he got notes of introduction. eventually from the secretary of war as well as senator pomeroy and others. he went to essentially levy a protest against the methods by which black troops were being recruited. he was himself a recruiter of black

my subject, of course, is frederick douglass. he was born frederick agustus washington bailey on the holme him farm along the tuckahoe river on maryland's eastern store in february, 1818. a little more on that background in just a moment. in this year, 1862, frederick douglass resides in rochester, new york, where he moved in 1847 after his return from a more than two-year sojourn in great britain. where he moved in part for security and safety for himself and his family, even though at that point, his legal freedom was purchased that very year by his british friends. he would no longer have to live as a fugitive slave. but rochester was to a degree an enclave of anti-slavery neighbors. he is in at this point the 15th year of editing the longest lasting black anti-slavery newspaper ever, then known as "douglass' monthly." earlier known as "the north star." he travels constantly as the singlemost sought after anti-slavery orator in the land. he is at this point in 1862, the author of more than 1,000 editorials in his newspapers an

it's a commitment reflected in anacostia alums like frederick gregory who graduated in 1958 from this school and became the first african-american in our history to command a space shuttle. it's reflected in the small business owners who have opened up furniture stores and theaters in the community, the artists and leaders who have lived in anacostia throughout generations who remain committed to the success of this community. it's reflected in a man once called the sage of anacostia, lived just a few blocks from this school in a home called cedar hill that i had a chance to take my girls to last summer. it's a beautiful home. as all of you know, i'm talking about frederick douglass. [ applause ] we remember him today as one of america's most eloquent and beloved leaders. i want you to think for a moment about what it took for frederick douglass to become that type of leader. just think about it. i want you to think about the odds he faced when he was your age. this is a man who was born into slavery. his mom died when he was a boy. he never knew his father. because it was illegal to

advisory, jim, affects portions of the area well to the north and west of washington talking about frederick county, the counties in through the western virginia panhandle, and out toward the west. this does not include the metro area but we are going to see at least some snow here. but the snow is not going to be the biggest factor. out there right now current temperatures at 44 degrees. under clear skies or rather cloudy skies. but calm winds at the current moment. temperatures around the region into the 30s. back to the west. 34 in martinsburg, west virginia. 39 frederick, maryland where we've seen a few snowflakes flying and a few rain drops around manassas and washington also over toward annapolis a little earlier. here is storm 4 radar showing moisture moving on in here. this moisture is going to move through in two swaths. one around the midnight hour tonight and then another one during the afternoon tomorrow and both of those could give us a little bit in the way of some accumulating snowfall. we'll continue to watch that for you as it moves on in. overnight tonight expect light rain

frederick 32; hagerstown, 32 and a half an inch to hagerstown and that is coating the ground in frederickns of frederick county around thurmont, an inch to an inch and a half and in town, 38 degrees. at 7:00, still some rain and snow, 36, and that is some rain- snow lingering and some rain and snow and cloudy and 11:00 -- and we're going to touch freezing in the district. most of the snow stayed to the north of us and we're beginning to see the back side of the system crossing i-81 and that won't be long and before it's east of town and in terms of what we're going to get, just rain here and up to an inch of snow and that is into the west, with a few pockets up to an inch and up to i-81 and to the west, the higher elevations and they may pick up as much as three inches. the snow phase this evening, clouds will break up overnight and 32 in town. colder in the suburbs and watch out for a few slippery spots late tonight and early tomorrow morning and there we go. right into the sunshine for tomorrow and i want to show you the five-day forecast. we're 47 for a high tomorrow and some lower 50s
