tell us a little bit about those champions of black enlistment like frederick douglas. to what degree were they overtly referring to connections and deep roots, invoking the heros of slave rebellion and so on? was that an explicit theme in the calls for military service? >> absolutely. i think that frederick douglas really wanted to make it a point that this is the heritage of black men. right? that this is a long tradition of service but this moment seems to be special for him because he really believes that this is the moment that could possibly hope against hope, right? that black people everywhere could become free. and so those wars preceding the civil war were used in abolitionist literature to make the case for abolition long before the war. the wartime moment is the culmination of really years and years of building that case. and so whenever there was a war, there was always kind of this charge that this could be a really interesting opportunity. but what makes this really particularly special for african americans is the presence of the black press. right? and

in his attempts to convince black men to enlist in the war, frederick douglas said you are not only a man, but an american citizen and you have expressed not only your willingness, but your desire to express your willingness and obligation. military service in particular was a mall mark of civic virtue or the manner in which you supported the broader interest of the republic. he understood that it qualified members for the republic. for 19th century americans, nothing captured the sacrifice for the greater good than military service. douglas believed it would ignite an important debate with black soldiers in mind. singleton, charlie and samuel understood the myriad ways that service might alter the enslaved people without hearing his words or arguments about natural law. decades after the war, singleton offered a wore the uniform of those men in blue. he penned those words with great pride and conviction when the games of reconstruction were nearly diminish ed. throughout his lifetime it served as a symbol of promise and devastation. the black soldiers represented an array of experien
