with me now is james galliano, a retired fbi supervisory special agent and cnn law enforcement analysts, glad you could be with us. police say they recovered several weapons and higher capacity magazines as well as a suppressor at the scene. they located weaponry here on the scene as well as at the person's place of residence. so what does this tell you about the level of planning this individual may have had? >> well, fred, first of all, the police have done in my estimation a masterful job thus far in first of all interdicting the gunman. and unfortunately 12 innocent souls were lost. but they got to him as quick as they could, they engaged in a long-running gun battle with him and were able to stop him, because he would have obviously done more damage. how do we know that? well, the police have been kind of circumspect and i think a little reluctant to fully release all the details about the weapons recovered. they have stated that a .45 was recovered. that appears to be the weapon that they gunman used to take all those lives, injure all those people and even strike a police office

. >> i'm joined by retired fbi supervisory special agent james galliano. he's a couple minutes from west point academy there in new york. and james, you obviously are a graduate of west point. you know the terrain very, very well. what is your initial reaction to this news? >> poppy, just horrific news. and obviously, folks that are at the united states military academy and preparing to be army officers, they understand that training is tough and it's realistic. and at times there are accidents. and there are casualties from helicopter crashes or sometimes friendly fire incidents. this appears to be what was a 2 1/2-ton light medium tact kk vehicle. it was transporting about 20 cadets and three active duty soldiers at the time on route 293, which you pointed out is fairly close to my home. the accident took place by camp natural bridge. now, just so the viewer understands, camp natural bridge is a facility that houses active duty soldiers, not cadets, during summer training. so the 101st airborne division or the 82nd airborne division will send active duty
