. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. streets shut down after an officer shot and killed a pit bull. this is in the area of 3rd street, between empire and jackson street. bob redell just got to the scene. >> reporter: good morning. it could be another 10, 15 minutes as chp tells us before they clear the intersection here at 3rd and empire. down in order 3rd, that home where all of this took place. anywhere between 15 and 20 u units that respond. when the call first went out, a call of shots fired. very serious situation. especially considering the extraordinary level of violence in the city over past several we weeks months. the call was fortunately not as serious as initially went out. that shots fired was officer shooting a pit bull. here's what happened, the officer was doing a parolee check, there was an aggressive pit bull, the pit bull bit the officer. a man ended up shooting and killing the dog. the officer has been taken to the hospital, not life-threatening injuries, was hurt, is going to be okay. as far as the parolee, that person is in custody. not clear what crime that pa

this afternoon angeles garcia torres is due back in a courtroom after being accused of killing sierra teenager lamar. according to court documents garcia torres is required to be in court today. >>> happening today the owner of a 70-foot schooner that sank near richmond will try to raise the boat today. we have alex savage in richmond with more on the delicate operation. >> reporter: yes. the schooner is under 30 feet of water right now off the coast of point richmond here, off the break water, in fact, stuck in several feet of mud. the owners of the boat have an ambitious plan to lift it out of the water and get it back to shore. they will put the plan into place later on this morning. today crews will be using a crane to lift the boat out of the mud and tow it in. divers finished patching up the holes on the boat yesterday to get it ready. it ran aground on the 4th of july near the break water here. the coastguard had to rescue the 19 passengers on board and ordered the owners of the boat to raise the 750-foot sailboat out of the water. the scooter was built by haden and fern brown

teresa garcia is in one town where everyone was told to get out. >> reporter: closed signs and empty streets show the impact of the mandatory evacuations in effect for the small town of idylwild. >> it's very somber. >> reporter: mary is one of the few remaining holdouts. neither sheriff's deputies nor the pleas from her friends can get her to leave. >> i think the people who call me scare me more than being here. >> reporter: the fire has consumed thousands of acres and destroyed at least a half dozen homes. hotshot crews are using chain saws and rakes to clear out brush and build fire breaks. the afternoons are one of the most dangerous times for firefighters with temperatures reaching into the triple digits, which can help spread the fire more rapidly. the biggest challenge for crews is this terrain. it is steeped, it is rugged, making it difficult to build a containment line around the fire, and the timber out here are so incredibly dry, making for a lot of volatile fuel. >> it is so dry right now that this is reacting like a late september/early october fire. >> reporter: offici
