i want to start with garrett haake. garrett, you started your day at the metro meeting this small group of protesters, frankly. can you walk us through what you've seen over the course of today? >> sure, kasie. it was clear from the word go that this rally was not going to be everything that it was advertised as. when organizers put it together, they had told people to meet at the metro in vienna, virginia around 2:00 so they could come into the city as a big group and a show of force and for their own protection. they got their protection from mpd once they made it to the district of columbia. there was no show of force. only two dozen or so with jason kessler the organizer of charlottesville last year, and doing the unite the white rally 2.0 here in d.c. today, the disorganization, the disunity, the lack of message was clear from the start. most of these folks showed up. they didn't even have metro cards so they marched into the vienna metro station and then marched right up to the metro card machine and had to slow t

garrett tenney has the latest from the white house. garrett?> well, jon, this is not the first time president trump has stoked speculation that jeff sessions could be on his way out, but this time around there are some differences. you remember last year, senator lindsay graham warned there would be hell to pay if the president fired sessions. that was fairly emblematic of how most g.o.p. senators felt. this week though senator graham along with senator grassley said they could be open to confirming a new attorney general after the midterm elections. on nbc's meet the press, though, senator jeff flake said firing sessions would still raise a lot of concerns for most folks on capitol hill. >> maybe a few isolated voices saying that the president ought to fire him now. i can tell you, as a body, we're saying please don't. the concern obviously is that would be the first domino to fall, then what happens with rod rosenstein? what happens with bob mueller? and i think firing jeff sessions would concern us all that that's the first domino. >> this l

garrett haake, my colleague, covering the protests for us today. i'm joined by todd johnson, he's the editorial and we have an associate professor of anthropology studies and shermichael singleton is with me. garrett stressed how small this group was, calling it more of a club more than a rally. no indication that what they said was heard because of the size of the counterprotests that we saw there at lafayette. your reaction to that. just the opposition that we saw come out in force in washington, d.c. today. >> well, in the words of dr. king, they chose the light over the darkness. as we said earlier though, these individuals still have a great deal of presence on social media. i think there was also some earlier reporting that garrett did where they said they -- some of them had their faces covered. why not wear a hood? that was the purpose of the kkk hood, so you could not see who the individuals were. so we see that the nature of white supremacy and white supremacist activism is still cowardice in form. why didn't the people show up in washing

garrett haake. garrett, is the white house explaining why this all happened now, why it hasn't happened earlier and what it all signifies? >> reporter: on the short-term part of that, sarah sanders told me this is the first time they could get the national security bigwigs all together in the same room at the same time to do a bro briefing. the white house has concerned for some time but the counterargument to that is why hasn't the president been talking about it. that's part of what made today's briefing so extraordinary, really both of those points. my colleagues who have been at the white house longer than i say they can't remember a time where you had that much national security muscle all on stage at once talking about an issue, but you know contrast that with how little or how dismissively the president talks about that same issue. you heard some of that if you watched that briefing, some of that dichotomy and push and pull between the seriousness with which these white house officials appear

msnbc correspondent garrett haik joins us from the o'connor headquarters in westerville, ohio.mocrats there waiting for their first victory in over 35 years in this district. what's the latest from there? >> well, lawrence, it sounds like they're going to have to wait a little bit longer. they're trying to keep enthusiasm up here, but as steve pointed out the numbers are just really, really tough to make up for this democratic campaign here of danny o'connor, who by a lost accounts really ran pretty much error-free baseball. essentially the last couple of days of this campaign. but really ran into a wall with the math. i can tell you by being on the ground here the last few days the enthusiasm for this candidacy and for the idea of taking back the house is absolutely real here. and it's something that's going to buoy democrats across the country, that they outperformed here, regardless of the final result. but that said, moral victories do not a majority make. and republicans i think will look at this and say their theory of the case, of bringing in president trump, juicing tur
